Spec Miata is a popular class that originated in the United States. The category is intended to allow competitors to race in a low-cost environment by using a single marque with minimal modifications.

This year, the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs Ontario Region introduced this concept and called it the Miata Canada Cup. The rules are similar to those used by the Sports Car Club of America and the National Auto Sport Association. Miatas and MX-5s manufactured from 1990 to the present are eligible, and based on their vintage and level of preparation, they are put into one of three classes.

  • MMC1 - These are the Miatas produced from 1990 to 2005 and have the Mazda designation NA or NB.
  • MCCU - This is the unlimited division and includes all other Miatas (2006 to 2015).

Restrictor plates are required on some of the newer, larger displacement vehicles to equalize engine performance. The transmission and final drive ratios remain primarily as delivered by the factory.

The suspension components must use the stock mounting points; however, shock absorbers, springs and sway bars may be upgraded. Based on the class, brakes, wheels and tires are subject to different regulations.

A car's final weight, including driver, is determined by engine code and displacement.

  • NA 1.6 liter engine - 2,275 lbs.
  • NA 1.8 liter engine - 2,400 lbs.
  • NB1 1.8 liter engine - 2,400 lbs.
  • NB2 l.8 liter engine - 2,450 lbs.

The 2025 season consists of four race weekends. During each event, there are three contests.

  • May 10-11 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • May 31 - June 1 - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • August 23-24 - Calabogie Motorsport Park
  • October 4-5 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Shannonville Motorsport Park hosted the second weekend of the 2025 Miata Canada Cup during the SMP Cup event. Saturday's activities were staged on the Pro Layout, while Sunday's races were contested on the Long Track.

Twenty-three Miata Canada Cup competitors exit Shannonville Motorsport Park's final turn for the start of the weekend's second contest. On the pole is the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata of Saturday's winner, Owen Clark. Beside Clark is Matt Gauthier driving the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. Gridded third and fourth are the No. 17 Can-Saf Auto Repairs Mazda Miata of Kurt Langeveldt and Dennis Beaudry in the No. 88 Mazda Miata.
It isn't easy to bet against Owen Clarke. The driver, the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata, secured the 2024 Miata Canada Cup championship after a tight battle with Matt White. This year, Clarke opened his title defense with three victories at the British Empire Motor Club's Spring Trophy Races. In the series' second weekend at Shannonville Motorsport Park, he continued to dominate the proceedings, collecting three victories.
The No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group-sponsored Mazda Miata is piloted by Matt Gauthier. Gauthier appears to be the biggest threat to Owen Clarke securing back-to-back Miata Canada Cup championships.  He finished in the runner-up position three times during the season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Gauthier repeated his performance at Shannonville Motorsports Park, earning three more second-place results.
Twenty-one Miata Canada Cup drivers enter Shannonville Motorsport Park's corner one for their final race of the SMP Cup. At the front of the field is the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata of the current points leader and last season's series champion, Owen Clarke. Immediately behind Clarke is the other front-row starter, Matt Gauthier, in the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. Trailing the leaders are Kurt Langeveldt and Ryder Brown.
Kurt Langeveldt campaigns the No. 17 Can-Saf Auto Repairs prepared Mazda Miata. Langeveldt opened the season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with a third and two fifth-place finishes. He qualified fourth for the opening race at the SMP Cup but started third when Aidan Shimbashi had problems. Langeveldt held the position to the checkered flag. On Sunday, he collected two more thirds despite threats from Shimbashi and Ryder Brown.
Karter Aidan Shimbashi gets faster each time he gets behind the wheel of the No. 701 TM Motorsport Mazda Miata. In his first weekend of the series, he improved from a nineteenth-place finish in race one to a ninth in the finale. At Shannonville, Shimbashi qualified third but was unable to start the first race.  In the Sunday warm-up, he was the fastest. Shimbashi started race two in twenty-first and finished fifth. In the final, he secured a fourth-place result.
