Spec Miata is a popular class that originated in the United States. The category is intended to allow competitors to race in a low-cost environment by using a single marque with minimal modifications.

This year, the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs Ontario Region introduced this concept and called it the Miata Canada Cup. The rules are similar to those used by the Sports Car Club of America and the National Auto Sport Association. Miatas and MX-5s manufactured from 1990 to the present are eligible, and based on their vintage and level of preparation, they are put into one of three classes.

  • MMC1 - These are the Miatas produced from 1990 to 2005 and have the Mazda designation NA or NB.
  • MCCU - This is the unlimited division and includes all other Miatas (2006 to 2015).

Restrictor plates are required on some of the newer, larger displacement vehicles to equalize engine performance. The transmission and final drive ratios remain primarily as delivered by the factory.

The suspension components must use the stock mounting points; however, shock absorbers, springs and sway bars may be upgraded. Based on the class, brakes, wheels and tires are subject to different regulations.

A car's final weight, including driver, is determined by engine code and displacement.

  • NA 1.6 liter engine - 2,275 lbs.
  • NA 1.8 liter engine - 2,400 lbs.
  • NB1 1.8 liter engine - 2,400 lbs.
  • NB2 l.8 liter engine - 2,450 lbs.

The 2025 season consists of four race weekends. During each event, there are three contests.

  • May 10-11 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • May 31 - June 1 - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • August 23-24 - Calabogie Motorsport Park
  • October 4-5 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

During the first weekend of the 2025 Miata Canada Cup, drivers competed in three twenty-five-minute contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

The 2025 Miata Canada Cup opening round and twenty-two competitors funnel through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s corner two. The pole-sitter, Matt Gauthier, is leading the field in the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. Behind Gauthier is the other front-row starter and reigning champion, Owen Clarke, driving the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata. Trailing the leaders are Kurt Langeveldt and Shawn Shuiskiy.
Owen Clarke got off to an excellent start in defense of his 2024 Miata Canada Cup title. The driver of the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata swept the weekend by winning all three rounds of the event. Clarke qualified second for race one of the championship but passed the pole-sitter, Matt Gauthier, for the top spot. He started on the pole Sunday morning and held off the challengers to finish first.  Clarke delivered a similar performance in the finale.
Last year, Owen Clarke had to contend with Matt White on the way to the crown. This year, his greatest threat appears to come from Matt Gauthier, who finished third in last year’s points chase. Gauthier put the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata on the pole in the first contest. He traded positions with Clarke, Kurt Langeveldt and Shawn Shuiskiy before finishing second. In the next two rounds, Gauthier chased Clarke to runner-up results.
The start of Sunday morning’s race (round two) for the 2025 Miata Canada Cup. Leading the way is the pole-sitter and Saturday’s winner, Owen Clarke, piloting the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata. Trailing Clarke is round one’s fastest qualifier and yesterday’s runner-up, Matt Gauthier, driving the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. Behind the leaders is the third-place starter, Kurt Langeveldt, driving the No. 17 Can-Saf Auto Repairs Mazda Miata.
Kart racer Shawn Shuiskiy made an excellent debut on the first weekend of the 2025 Miata Canada Cup. Shuiskiy qualified fourth fastest for the event’s first contest, driving the No. 14 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. In the race, he battled with Owen Clarke, Matt Gauthier and Kurt Langeveldt for the lead. Unfortunately, he went off course in turn three and finished sixth. The next day, Shuiskiy redeemed himself with a pair of third-place results.
The first lap of the finale through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s Moss corner. At the front of the field is the second-place starter, Matt Gauthier, in the No. 13 Roadsport Auto Group Mazda Miata. Chasing Gauthier is the pole-sitter and the winner of the first two races, Owen Clarke driving the No. 36 Team Red Green Mazda Miata. The No. 14 Mazda Miata of Shawn Shuiskiy and Geoff Johnson in the No. 114 Mazda Miata follow the leaders.
Kurt Langeveldt has many years of experience preparing and racing Mazdas. In 2011, Lageveldt drove the Can-Saf Mazda Protégé to ninth in the Touring Car division of the Canadian Touring Car Championship. This season, he drives the No. 17 Can-Saf Auto Repairs Mazda Miata. Langeveldt was third fastest in qualifying for round one, and despite going off track in turn three, he finished third. In the next two contests, Langeveldt finished fourth and fifth.
Chad Payton returned for his second year in the Miata Canada Cup. Last season, Payton finished eighth in the championship, with his best results being three seventh-place finishes. He qualified fifth for the season opener, driving the No. 24 Wrap Force / Can-Saf Mazda Miata, and grabbed a spot in the race to finish fourth. On Sunday morning, Payton started and crossed the finish line in fourth. In the final race, he was gridded fourth but finished fifth.
