The popular Mini Stock category provides new drivers with an opportunity to participate in an entry-level stock car class. Rules are written to keep costs to a minimum.

The Mini Stock division is open to any 2010 and older approved 4-cylinder automobile having an engine no larger than 2500cc. The cars may be front or rear-wheel drive. Rules prohibit convertibles, 4-wheel drives, trucks, BMW, Audi, Saab turbo, V-Tec, supercharged or rotary engines. Also, excluded are mid or rear-engine vehicles. The weight of the cars is determined by the engine displacement and cylinder head design.

The body must retain its stock appearance - no chopping, channeling or sectioning is allowed.

Safety is a major concern in this division. Mini Stocks are fitted with a roll cage, fuel cell, five-point quick-release belts (shoulder and lap), aluminum racing seat and a window net.

Some of the makes and models typically raced by competitors include the Ford Mustang, Nissan 240SX, Acura Integra, Honda Civic and Pontiac Sunfire.

In early August, three consecutive days were set aside for Mini Stock competitors to race at three different tracks. Delaware Speedway hosted the Mini Stock Invitational on Friday evening. The next stop was Saturday at Peterborough Speedway, and Sunset Speedway hosted the final event.

The Mini Stocks were a support event for the Flyin’ Frank 49 Super Stock Invitational at Sunset Speedway. Drivers competed in a thirty-five-lap contest around the 1/3-mile banked asphalt oval.

The event attracted twenty-two competitors.

The pace lap for the Mini Stock feature at Sunset Speedway. Leading a field of twenty-two competitors is the pole-sitter, Blaise Shaw, in the No. 81 Spira Ford Mustang. On the outside of Shaw is Matt Young driving the No. 7 Blue Streak Contracting Acura Integra. Row two is occupied by the No. 83 Kawartha Metals Corp. Ford Mustang of Cameron McGlashan and Curtis Burnett in the No. 98 Northern Transmission Ford Mustang.
Doug Butler made it three victories in a row Sunday night at Sunset Speedway. Butler collected his first win at Delaware, followed by another at Peterborough Speedway.  The driver of the No. 10 R.S.A. Autoparts Nissan 240SX was fastest in the first practice session at Sunset. He finished fourth in the first heat race and lined up thirteenth for the feature. Butler maneuvered his way through the field and was first to cross the finish line.
Jacob Sutcliffe leads the Mini Stock point standings at Sunset Speedway and drives the No. 27 MacMillan Motorsports Ford Mustang. In addition to Sunset, Sutcliffe entered Delaware Speedway, where he finished fourth. He skipped Peterborough. Sutcliffe competed in the first qualifier and grabbed the victory. He was gridded in the twelfth position for the feature and advanced eleven places to finish in the runner-up spot.
It’s not uncommon to find Will Gibbons in the winner’s circle at race tracks throughout Ontario. Gibbons drives the No. 10 Honda CRX with backing from Norm’s Fast Lube and England Tire. He was second fastest in the first practice session and quickest in the second. Gibbons was the runner-up in heat race one and started the feature in fifteenth place. He battled his way to the front and received the checker in the third position.
Rob Crick is a regular at Peterborough Speedway and is currently third in the point standings. Crick participated in the Mini Stock events at Delaware and his home track. He started the feature at Sunset in eighteenth place.   On the opening lap, the field stacked up exiting corner two. Crick’s No. 84 Acura Integra ran over the right rear of Dan Pettit’s Acura and barrel-rolled down the back straight before landing safely on its wheels.
The winner of Sunset Speedway’s Mini Stock contest at the Flyin’ Frank 49 Super Stock Invitational, Doug Butler, celebrates with family and friends. Butler used to be a regular at Sunset and knows the track very well. However, the driver of the No. 10 R.S.A. Autoparts Nissan 240SX proved he can win anywhere in Ontario with victories at Delaware Speedway and Peterborough Speedway.
