The Nissan Micra Cup series made its debut in 2015. The championship was designed to provide racers with the most affordable race vehicle in Canada. New for 2021, and replacing the Micra series, was the Nissan Sentra Cup. Last year the grids still included the older Micras, but they are nolonger eligible to compete in the series.

Each Nissan Sentra competing in the series carries a price tag of $39,990. The Sentras were prepared by the Motorsports in Action team at St-Eustache, with the development being performed by Canadian racing veteran Jean-Francois Dumoulin. The cars are powered by a DACT four-cylinder 2.0-liter sequential multi-point fuel injection engine which produces 149-horsepower at 6,400-rpm. Some performance upgrades include four-piston front calipers, adjustable coil-overs, 18”X9” alloy wheels, braided stainless steel flex lines and a MoTec M1 Series ECM. To address safety, the Sentra Cup cars include features such as an FIA Spec six-point roll cage, FIA homologated six-point harness and FIA homologated racing seat.

Each race weekend consists of two forty-minute contests.

  • May 17-19 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • July 6-7 - Complexe ICAR
  • July 18-20 - Lime Rock Park
  • August 9-11 - Circuit de Trois-Rivières
  • August 30 - September 1 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • September 27-29 - Calabogie Motorsports Park

Rounds one and two of the 2024 Nissan Sentra Cup were held on the Victoria Day Speedfest weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Drivers would compete in two contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

Nineteen Nissan Cup competitors dive into Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s corner one for the second race of the 2024 season. The No. 1 Ste-Foy Nissan / Fix Auto Nissan Sentra of the pole-sitter, Alexandre Fortln, is slightly ahead. Beside Fortin is the other front-row starter, Eric Chaput, driving the No. 116 Groupe Gabriel / Mallette Nissan Sentra. Fortin’s father and teammate, Daniel Fortin, is chasing the leaders in the No. 95 Ste-Foy Nissan / Fix Auto Nissan Sentra.
When the dust settled at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Nicolas Barrette was the championship leader heading into Complexe ICAR. Barrette put the No. 427 Groupe RM Nissan Sentra sixth on the grid for round one. During the race, he maintained his position and finished fifth. On Sunday, Barrett started sixth but inherited two positions when there was contact between the leaders. By the mid-point of the contest, he was in the lead and held on for the win.
Daniel Fortin went from zero to hero during the opening weekend of the series. Alexandre and Daniel Fortin were running in tandem during Friday’s test session. He missed his braking point entering 5A and hit the tire wall, damaging the left front corner of the No. 95 Ste-Foy Nissan Sentra. However, the crew repaired the car overnight, and Fortin qualified third for race one and finished fourth. In the finale, he led before finishing second and ended the event second in the points chase.
The defending Nissan Sentra Cup champion drives the No. 1 Ste-Foy Nissan / Fix Auto Nissan Sentra, Alexandre Fortin.  Fortin set the pace early and won the pole for the season’s first contest. Despite the challenges from Eric Chaput and Valerie Limoges, he grabbed the victory. Fortin started first once again for the finale. Going into corner three on the opening lap, he had contact with Chaput. Fortin pitted for a new tire and lost two laps, finishing sixteenth.
Last year, Simon Vincent competed in both the Micra and Sentra categories. He is piloting the No. 91 Vincent 2 Racing Team Nissan Sentra this season. During qualifying, Vincent was tenth fastest in a field of nineteen entries. A problem with Matt Miron’s Sentra and a pass allowed him to finish eighth. Vincent was gridded tenth for the last contest but advanced seven positions before the checkered flag to grab the final position on the rostrum.
Sports car veteran Valerie Limoges won the 2022 Nissan Sentra Cup title and finished second in last year’s championship. She is driving the No. 777 Groupe Gabriel / Total Energies Nissan Sentra this year. Limoges qualified fourth, and she was in second by the ninth lap of the race. She chased the leader, Alexandre Fortin, and finished in the runner-up position by a margin of 0.622 seconds. On Sunday, contact relegated her to a fourteenth-place result.
Eric Chaput joined Nissan’s series in 2019 but only competed in three races last year. Chaput was driving the No. 116 Groupe Gabriel / Mallette Nissan Sentra and qualified second fastest. He challenged the pole-sitter, Alexandre Fortin, but couldn’t find a way past and lost a position to Valerie Limoges to finish third. On Sunday morning, he started on the front row with Fortin. On the opening lap, the two drivers went side-by-side until corner three, when there was contact – Chaput retired.
