Now in its thirty-fourth year, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) is responsible for sanctioning two divisions: Modified and Hot Rod.

On November 1, 2022, it was announced that OSCAAR had merged with the United Racing Series. The relationship increases OSCAAR’s resources and allows the United Racing Series to expand its brand and footprint in motorsports.

In other news, JRS Auctions.com signed on as the title sponsor for the Hot Rod division.

Twelve races are on the 2024 JRS Auctions OSCAAR Hot Rod schedule.

The cars competing in the championship are constructed to specifications and rules common to most stock car series. What makes the Hot Rod division unique are the makes and models that compete in the division. The cars must be North American, have a steel body and have been produced between 1949 and 1984. No convertibles or front-wheel-drive vehicles can participate in this series. Changes to the rules in the off-season included the addition of pick-up trucks and an increase in the eligible year range from 1974 to 1984. The Hot Rods must have a stock roof, grill, tail and the rest of the body panels can be fabricated from 22-gauge sheet steel but must retain a stock appearance. Many other rules governing this class are for safety and to keep the costs down.

The final weekend of the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series was held at ‘Canada’s Toughest 1/3 Mile,’ Peterborough Speedway, during the 31st Annual APC Autumn Colours Classic. Drivers would compete on the 1/3 mile asphalt oval in two heat races followed by a forty-lap feature.

After two heat races, the grid was set for the final contest of the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series. On the pole is the No. 6 1972 Dodge Challenger of Rob Bromley. On the outside of Bromley is Steve Book driving the No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk. Behind the leaders are the No. 00 1971 Chevrolet Camaro of Trevor Thompson and Cory McAllister in the No. 71X 1974 Dodge Dart. In row three are Rick Spencer-Walt and Amanda Balson.
Entered in the No. 31 1962 Ford Thunderbird was Rick Spencer-Walt. Spencer-Walt has competed in a couple of different series this year. The 31st Annual APC Autumn Colours Classic was his third OSCAAR Hot Rod event of the season. Spencer-Walt won his first qualifier and was the runner-up in his second heat race. He started the feature in fifth place. On lap 10, Spencer-Walt passed Steve Book for second, and one circuit later, he went by Rob Bromley for the lead and victory.
Several cars in the JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series have some connection to Bromley Automotive. Rob Bromley drove the No. 6 1972 Dodge Challenger. He won his first heat race but finished sixth in the second qualifier. Bromley started the finale on the pole and led the first eleven laps before being passed by Rick Spencer-Walt. He held on for a runner-up finish. Bromley was fourth in the championship standings with four heat wins and one feature victory.
After winning this season’s LUDUH Hot Rod championship at Sunset Speedway, Amanda Balson entered the final two rounds of the JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series. In the previous event at Flamboro Speedway, she retired late due to a mechanical issue. With repairs made to the No. 16 1974 Chevrolet Camaro for Peterborough, Balson collected a pair of runner-up results in the heats. She was gridded sixth for the feature and finished third.
The two-time JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series champion Steve Book has five heat wins this season but no feature victories. Book’s weekend at the 31st Annual APC Autumn Colours Classic ended with a victory in the first heat race and a third place in his second qualifier. The driver of the No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk lined up beside the pole-sitter for the feature but would lose two positions during the race to finish in the fourth position.
The ‘Big One’ came on lap 19 when Dan Archibald attempted to pass Cory McAllister heading into corner three. The two cars hit the wall and collected Trevor Thompson, Thomas Wunsch and Rob Cousineau. Also impacted by the incident was the points leader, Tyler Hawn. Arhibald, Wunsch and Cousineau could continue, while Hawn pitted for repairs. McAllister and Thompson suffered severe damage and were unable to continue.
Tyler Hawn was the championship leader entering the final weekend of the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series. This year, his OSCAAR tally includes three heat victories and four feature wins. At the 31st Annual APC Autumn Colours Classic, Hawn finished second and fifth in his heats. He was gridded ninth for the finale and was sixth at the time of the multi-car accident. Hawn pitted for repairs and finished sixth to earn his record fifth championship.
The top three finishers for the final round of the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod Series held at Peterborough Speedway’s 31st Annual APC Autumn Colours Classic. In the center is the winner, Rick Spencer-Walt. This was the third OSCAAR Hot Rod event of the year for Spencer-Walt. On the left is series regular Rob Bromley, who finished in the runner-up position. Bromley was fourth in the final standings. The final position is occupied by Amanda Balson.
