Now in its thirty-fourth year, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) is responsible for sanctioning two divisions: Modified and Hot Rod.

On November 1, 2022, it was announced that OSCAAR had merged with the United Racing Series. The relationship increases OSCAAR’s resources and allows the United Racing Series to expand its brand and footprint in motorsports.

In other news, JRS Auctions.com signed on as the title sponsor for the Hot Rod division.

Twelve races are on the 2024 JRS Auctions OSCAAR Hot Rod schedule.

  • June 1 - Flamboro Speedway
  • June 15 - Sauble Speedway
  • June 28 - Delaware Speedway
  • June 29 - Delaware Speedway
  • July 13 - Full Throttle Speedway
  • August 3 - Peterborough Speedway
  • August 17 - Sauble Speedway
  • August 24 - Sunset Speedway Speedway
  • September 7 - Delaware Speedway
  • September 21 - Brighton Speedway
  • October 5 - Flamboro Speedway
  • October 12 - Peterborough Speedway

The cars competing in the championship are constructed to specifications and rules common to most stock car series. What makes the Hot Rod division unique are the makes and models that compete in the division. The cars must be North American, have a steel body and have been produced between 1949 and 1984. No convertibles or front-wheel-drive vehicles can participate in this series. Changes to the rules in the off-season included the addition of pick-up trucks and an increase in the eligible year range from 1974 to 1984. The Hot Rods must have a stock roof, grill, tail and the rest of the body panels can be fabricated from 22-gauge sheet steel but must retain a stock appearance. Many other rules governing this class are for safety and to keep the costs down.

A doubleheader event for the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rods was held at Delaware Speedway during the track’s Canada Day Race Weekend. On Friday evening, drivers competed in round three of the series on Delaware’s ½-mile semi-banked asphalt oval.

On the pole for round three of the 2024 JRS Auction Hot Rod Series is the No. 4 1974 Chevrolet Camaro of Steve McCaw. Last year at this event, McCaw suffered a medical emergency after finishing second and left the track in an ambulance. Beside McCaw is the No. 90 1974 Pontiac Firebird driven by David Rockwood. Row two is the No. 00 1971 Chevrolet Camaro of Trevor Thompson and Steve Book in the No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk.
The JRS Auction Hot Rod Series three-time champion Tyler Hawn replaced his venerable 1966 Pontiac Beaumont during the off-season with a 1981 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Hawn won with the new car in the opening round at Flamboro Speedway. He finished second in his heat at Delaware Speedway and started the feature in fifth. When the race leaders crashed, Hawn was there to inherit first place and the win.
Trailing Tyler Hawn to the checkered flag was Steve Book in the No. 47 1960 Studebaker Hawk.  Book was gridded fourth for the feature after finishing third in the qualifier. He got by David Rockwood early in the race and chased the leaders. Book moved into second place when Steve McCaw and Trevor Thompson had their incidents on lap 18. He chased Tyler Hawn and finished in the runner-up position by a margin of 0.474 seconds.
The No. 9 1964 Rambler Ambassador is piloted by Cole Weber. Weber finished fourth in the opening round at Flamboro but wasn’t entered in the next event at Sauble. He collected a fourth-place result in his heat race. He started the twenty-five-lap feature in the eighth spot. Weber moved up the order with several passes during the contest. Like Hawn and Book, he was a beneficiary of the Thompson and McCaw incidents and finished third.
Providing the most entertainment in round three were Trevor Thompson in the No. 00 1971 Chevrolet Camaro and the No. 4 1974 Chevrolet Camaro of Steve McCaw. For much of the contest, the pair ran side-by-side – that is, until lap 18. Thompson lost control on the front straight and backed the Camaro into the pit wall. McCaw’s Camaro also suffered damage. The race was red-flagged to clear the cars and allow EMT staff to check on Thompson.
Tyler Hawn, the round three winner of the 2024 JRS Auction OSCAAR Hot Rod feature presented by The Fyre Place and Patio Shop, stands in the middle of family and friends. Hawn has already collected two victories. Based on his performance Friday evening, the 2018, 2019, and 2023 title holder is on track to collect his fourth championship. Interestingly, this year’s performance is coming in a new car that has had a minimal number of issues.
