The Challenge Cup Series provides competitive and low-cost competition for Formula Vee and Formula 1200 race car drivers in the U.S. and Canada.

This category of racing has been around for over sixty years.

Formula Vee (U.S.), or Formula 1200 (Canada), is a racing class based on a standard Volkswagen 1200 series Type 1, U.S. model sedan components. The engine, transmission, suspension and brakes are from these early Volkswagen Beetles. The motor used in this class is a four-cylinder with a displacement of 1,200 cc (73 cu.in.). Rule-limiting modifications allow the engines to produce approximately 50 horsepower. The cars use a tube frame design covered by a fiberglass body. To keep the costs down further, a spec tire, the Yokohama Advan A05 195/50R15 86V, is used by all teams. The minimum weight of the vehicle with the driver is 487.6 kg (1,075 lb).

Series partners include Automotive Safety Consulting, Maloney Racing, Womer Race Cars, Carbaugh Tool Company, Autowerks Engines, Speed Secrets, Quixote Racing, Noble Engines, The V-Dub Store, Duck ‘N’ Monkey and Castle Packs Power.

The 2024 Challenge Cup Series consists of five doubleheader weekends and a late season addition at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for three races.

  • April 26-28 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • June 7-9 - Pittsburgh International Race Complex
  • June 29-30 - Watkins Glen International
  • July 25-28 - New Jersey Motorsports Park
  • August 16-18 - Summit Point Motorsports Park
  • September 21-22 - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The sixth weekend of the 2024 Challenge Cup Series was held at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park during the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. Drivers competed in the three twenty-minute contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

The Challenge Cup competitors raced with the Ontario Region’s F1200 series.

The start of Sunday morning’s race. Twenty Challenge Cup Series and CASC-OR F1200 competitors stream into Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s corner one.  The No. 95 Hannum Racing / Autowerks / Kropp Tool Caracal D of the pole-sitter, William Hannum, leads the way. Beside Hannum is the other front row start Raymond Carmody driving the No. 27 Carbaugh Tool Co. / Bugs Life VW Transmissions Mysterian M-2.
Open wheel veteran and Challenge Cup Series points leader Sam Ryan brought a wealth of experience to the event. Ryan probably has more Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on track experience than any of the other drivers. He has campaigned Formula Fords and Formula 2000s at the circuit. To no surprise, Ryan topped the practice and qualifying sheets. In the race, he went flag-to-flag for the victory and won by a margin of 14.985 seconds.
The Carmody family from the Finger Lakes region of New York state also have some history at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Raymond Carmody drove the No. 27 Carbaugh Tool Co. / Bugs Life VW Transmissions Mysterian M-2.  He qualified and finished sixth in Saturday’s contest. The following morning, Carmody started second and grabbed the victory on the final lap. Arnold Carbaugh Jr. drove the car Sunday afternoon.
A second entry out of the Ryan family team was the No. 70 Ryan Racing Mysterian driven by Sam’s daughter, Emily. Emily Ryan qualified eighth in her category for the weekend’s first race and finished ninth. On Sunday morning, she started in the tenth position and advanced to a third-place result. In the process, Ryan recorded the fastest race lap, earning the pole for the finale. In the afternoon, she went unchallenged for the victory.
The No. 95 Hannum Racing / Autowerks / Kropp Tool sponsored Caracal D was driven by William Hannum. Hannum qualified a distant fourth for race one at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. However, he charged through the field to finish in the runner-up position. Hannum also logged the quickest race lap and earned the pole of the next contest. He swapped places with Raymond Carmody and finished second. He was not entered in the weekend’s final race.
Alex Gee piloted the No. 22 Protoform P2 with support from Carbaugh Tool Co. and Bugs Life VW Transmissions.  Gee qualified nineteenth overall and twelfth in class for race one and crossed the finish line in fourteen place and tenth in his category. On the final day, Gee started fourteen among the Challenge Cup competitors and finished eleventh. He ended the weekend with a runner-up result in his group.
