The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) introduced the Formula Regional (originally called Formula 3) concept in 2017 as the next step for Formula 4 competitors. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA Pro Racing) debuted the Formula Regional Americas Championship in 2018.

The American series is aligned with the FIA and partners Honda Performance Development, Hankook Tire America and Ligier Automotive.

Drivers compete in the Ligier JS F3, designed and manufactured by Ligier Automotive for the American series. The chassis is a carbon fiber monocoque. The suspension design is common to most open-wheel race cars: front and double wishbone, push-rod actuated shock absorbers, and springs with anti-roll bars.

The Ligier is powered by a turbocharged Honda K20C1 engine, which produces just over 300 horsepower. The motor is fitted with a six-speed sequential semi-automatic transmission.

The entire package weighs 1,430-pounds.

The 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship consists of seven weekends, with three races held at each venue. The exceptions are the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Circuit of the Americas, which will host two contests.

  • April 11-14 – NOLA Motorsports Park
  • May 16-19 – Road America
  • June 13-16 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  • June 20-23 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • July 25-28 – New Jersey Motorsports Park
  • August 29 - September 1 – Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • October 31 - November 3 – Circuit of the Americas

Rounds ten and eleven of the 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship were held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Drivers competed in two contests around the thirteen-turn 2.258-mile road course.

The start for round eleven of the 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship and twelve competitors enter the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course's 'Esses.' The second-place starter, Ryan Shehan, got a significant jump on the field, driving the No. 66 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3. Trailing Shehan is the pole-sitter Nicolas Ambiado in the No. 55 Ligier JS F3 and the No. 27 Ligier JS F3 of Patrick Woods-Toth.
The points leader is Ryan Shehan, the driver of the No. 66 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport-prepared Ligier JS F3. Sheehan has four podium results, of which two are victories. He would dominate the proceedings in rounds ten and eleven at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.  Shehan qualified second for the weekend's first contest but made an excellent start and led flag-to-flag. He gave a repeat performance in the finale for his fourth win of the season.
Last year's Formula 4 United States Champion, Patrick Woods-Toth, drives the No. 27 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3 with support from the Orlando Group.  Woods-Toth qualified on the pole for Saturday's contest. Unfortunately, a slipping clutch impeded his progress and he finished in the runner-up position. He started the weekend's second race in the third spot and finished in the same place. Woods-Toth is second in the championship.
Nicolas Ambiado has shown some speed this season, as evidenced by his two podium finishes. However,  he failed to collect points in round three at NOLA. The No. 55 Velox USA / Speed Factory driver qualified third for Saturday's contest. Unfortunately, he pitted a couple of times during the race and did not complete enough laps to score any points. On Sunday, Ambiado and the team redeemed themselves by starting on the pole and finishing second.
Although he failed to score points in three races, Jeff Bowling is third in the championship. Bowling had better luck at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He qualified fourth fastest for round ten in the No. 02 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport-prepared Ligier JS F3. Bowling benefitted from Nicolas Ambiado's issues to finish in third place. He started fourth in the weekend's last contest but lost a spot to Hayden Bowlsbey and finished fifth.
The top three finishers for round ten of the 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The winner and current points leader, Ryan Shehan, stands on the top step. The runner-up, Patrick Woods-Toth, is on the left side of the rostrum. Completing the top three and earning his second podium of the season is the third-place finisher, Jeff Bowling. The trio races cars prepared by Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport.
