The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) introduced the Formula Regional (originally called Formula 3) concept in 2017 as the next step for Formula 4 competitors. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA Pro Racing) debuted the Formula Regional Americas Championship in 2018.

The American series is aligned with the FIA and partners Honda Performance Development, Hankook Tire America and Ligier Automotive.

Drivers compete in the Ligier JS F3, designed and manufactured by Ligier Automotive for the American series. The chassis is a carbon fiber monocoque. The suspension design is common to most open-wheel race cars: front and double wishbone, push-rod actuated shock absorbers, and springs with anti-roll bars.

The Ligier is powered by a turbocharged Honda K20C1 engine, which produces just over 300 horsepower. The motor is fitted with a six-speed sequential semi-automatic transmission.

The entire package weighs 1,430-pounds.

The 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship consists of seven weekends, with three races held at each venue. The exceptions are the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Circuit of the Americas, which will host two contests.

  • April 11-14 – NOLA Motorsports Park
  • May 16-19 – Road America
  • June 13-16 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway
  • June 20-23 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • July 25-28 – New Jersey Motorsports Park
  • August 29 - September 1 – Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • October 31 - November 3 – Circuit of the Americas

Rounds fifteen, sixteen and seventeen of the 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Drivers would compete in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459 mile road course.

The first lap of round seventeen for the 2024 Formula Regional Americas Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The No. 31 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3 of Titus Sherlock is leading the field of nine competitors in to turn one. Beside Sherlock is the series' new champion, Patrick Woods-Toth, driving the No. 27 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3. Trailing the leaders is Hayden Bowlsbey in the No. 3 IGY6 Motorsports / Save 22 Ligier JS F3.
Patrick Woods-Toth made a successful transition from karting to capture the 2023 Formula 4 United States Championship. This year Woods-Toth advanced to the Formula Regional Americas Championship. He entered the penultimate weekend of the season with an opportunity to secure the title and did not fail. Woods-Toth swept all three contests in the No. 27 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3. He earned the crown in race two on Saturday afternoon.
Patrick Woods-Toth's most prominent challenger this weekend was Titus Sherlock. Sherlock drives the No. 31 Crosslink Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3. On Friday afternoon at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he started second and finished 0.616 seconds behind the winner Woods-Toth. Sherlock had similar results the following day. In the finale, he and Woods-Toth banged wheels on the opening lap. Sherlock pitted for repairs and finished ninth.
Third in the title chase is Jett Bowling, who had four podium finishes heading into Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In the weekend's first contest, Bowling qualified and finished third in the No. 02 Crossline Kiwi Motorsport Ligier JS F3. His performance on Saturday for round sixteen was the same as the previous day. He was gridded third for Sunday's race and was a beneficiary of Titus Sherlock's misfortune. Bowling finished in the runner-up spot.
At Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the Formula Regional Americas podium was dominated by this year's champions Patrick Woods-Toth, Titus Sherlock, and Jeff Bowling; however, Hayden Bowlsbey prevented the three drivers from sweeping the rostrum. The driver of the No. 3 IGY6 Motorsports / Save 22 opened the event by finishing sixth. In race two, a mechanical issue resulted in a ninth-place finish. Bowlsbey redeemed himself in the finale with a third.
