Due to COVID 19, the last couple of years have resulted in fewer races and limits on spectator attendance. In 2022, the federal and provincial governments have lifted many of the restrictions, which means that the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series has a full race calendar and will see the return of fans.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends with each event hosting three rounds.

  • SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • Pinty’s CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series opening rounds were held at Shannonville Motorsport Park during the SMP Cup weekend. Round one, conducted on Saturday, would be held on the shorter Pro Track. The Long Track, which incorporates the Nelson and Fabi configurations, was used for rounds two and three on Sunday.

Sixteen competitors enter the final corner at Shannonville Motorsport Park for round two of the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series. On the pole from Britain West Motorsport is the No. 66 Mygale SJ13 driven by Saturday's winner, Jake Cowden. Beside Cowden is his teammate and the runner-up in round one, David Clubine, in the No. 6 Mygale SJ15. Row two is occupied by William Ferguson and Callum Baxter.
Jake Cowden finished fourth in the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 championship standings. He returned this year, driving the familiar No. 66 Mygale SJ13 out of the Britain West Motorsport stable. Cowden topped the timesheets in practice and qualifying. On Saturday, he would go flag-to-flag for the win. In race two, Cowden fell to fourth place before finishing second and in the finale, he collected another runner-up result.
William Ferguson made his Toyo Tires F1600 Championship debut at Shannonville in the No. 2 Brian Graham Racing Piper DL7. Ferguson's impressive racing resume includes winning the Western Pro USA F4 championship. He qualified and finished third in the weekend's first contest. On Sunday morning, Ferguson capitalized on a mistake by Jake Cowden to grab the win. He led the final race from start to finish for the victory.
F1600B veteran Mike Lee has been part of the Ontario Region F1600 scene for over ten years. In 2022, Lee is campaigning the No. 25 Blue Gates Productions Van Diemen RF92. He started the season opener third in F1600B and crossed the finish line in the same position. The next day, Lee started third in class, but when the leaders eliminated themselves, Lee inherited the win. In the finale, he went unchallenged for the victory.

This was Sullivan's second victory of the weekend. On the right from Britain West Motorsport is the runner-up, Jake Cowden, who won on Saturday. Completing the rostrum is Cowden's teammate, Connor Clubine.
Connor Clubine clinched last year's F1600B category before the final weekend of racing. This year, he is piloting the No. 6 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ15. Clubine was gridded second for race one but dropped to fourth before battling back to a second-place result. In round two, an error caused him to fall to the rear of the field, but he worked his way up to a sixth-place finish. He ended the weekend with a third place.
One of the many cars at the opening weekend of the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship prepared by Britain West Motorsport was the F1600B class No. 88 Van Diemen RF90 driven by Jason Sharpe. Sharpe qualified thirteenth overall and second in class for Saturday's contest and claimed the victory. The next day, he had an incident with Dylan McPherson and retired on lap-2. In round three, Sharpe finished second.
