On Saturday, June 19, Flamboro Speedway held its first round of the 2021 Grisdale Triple Crown for Pro Late Models. A total event purse of over $33,000 attracted solid fields for the Pure Stock, Mini Stock, Canadian Vintage Modified and Super Stock divisions.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, Flamboro track management had to enforce pandemic protocols and could not permit fan attendance. Still, they succeeded in delivering an exciting event, which was covered by GForce TV.

The Super Stock category includes a variety of makes and models for the ‘60s to the current year. The rules used in the class allow some suspension modifications and changes to the bodies. Most Super Stock cars retain the original steel bodies with plastic noses and fiberglass hoods. They are powered by a modified small-block engine or crate motors from General Motors and Ford. The division serves as a ‘stepping stone’ for those drivers who aspire to compete in the Pro Late Model category.

The Super Stock race, which served as a tune-up for the new Qwik Wick series, was a fifty-lap contest around the 1/3-mile semi-banked asphalt oval. The total purse was over $5,000, with the winner collecting a cheque for $1,000. Unfortunately, a delay caused by an engine failure and the resulting oil on the track caused officials to reduce the contest to thirty-five laps.

The pace lap for the first Super Stock race of the season at Flamboro Speedway. On the pole is last year’s Frostoberfest Super Stock winner, Steve Cashmore, in the No. 27C Claybar Contracting sponsored Chevrolet Camaro. On the outside of the front row is the second- fastest qualifier and Flamboro veteran Randy Rusnell, driving the No. 72 Bunzl Safety Chevrolet Camaro. Eleven competitors started the contest.
Last season’s Flamboro Frostoberfest event wasn’t very kind to Gerrit Tiemersma. Tiemersma’s race came to an end on lap-33. But this year, he redeemed himself. During the winter, the team fitted the chassis with new Ford Mustang bodywork. Tiemersma qualified sixth fastest and avoided much of the drama during the contest, including the corner one incident, to claim his first victory of 2021.
Most fans of the short track scene in Ontario are familiar with the Lapcevich brothers, Cayden and Treyten. A third brother, Ryden, made his Super Stock debut at Flamboro Speedway this weekend. Lapcevich drove the No. 12L RGC Sports / Ace Services Chevrolet. He qualified in the fifth position and made steady progress during the race. Lapcevich missed the corner one incident, late in the contest, to finish second.
One of the unfortunate highlights at the 2020 Frostoberfest weekend was a significant incident in corner one of the Super Stock race, which eliminated many of the leaders. On lap-32 of this year’s contest, Randy Russnell lost an engine entering the first turn. Oil on the track caught several drivers out; one of them was last season’s winner Steve Cashmore in the No. 27 Chevrolet Camaro and Paul Pepper.
Finishing in the third position was local Flamboro Speedway regular Brad Collison. Collison was gridded in the third spot for the start of the thirty-five-lap contest. Early in the race, he was deemed to have caused a yellow when he hit Steve Cashmore and was moved to the rear of the field for the restart. However, the driver of the No. 13 LRR Chevrolet Camaro charged to the front and was in third place at the checkered flag.
The top three finishers for the first Super Stock race of the 2021 season at Flamboro Speedway. In the center and collecting the winner’s cheque for $1,000 is Gerrit Tiemersma, driver of the No. 17 Wayfreight Ford Mustang. On the left from the Lapcevich family is the rookie and runner-up finisher, Ryden Lapcevich. Standing on the right side is the third-place finisher, Brad Collison.
