The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada series made its debut in 2011. The championship is one of twenty-three similar GT3 Cup series contested throughout the world. The Canadian GT3 Cup events receive support from Ultra 94 fuel and Yokohama tires.

Drivers compete in one of three classes:

  • Platinum Class – This is for the 2017 - 2019 models of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. The GT3 Cup Porsche is based on the 911 street version. Within this group, there is the Platinum Masters category for competitors 45-years of age and older.
  • Gold Class – Older (2014 - 2016) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars compete in this category.
  • Silver Class - This category is for the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

The current generation Porsche GT3 Cup cars are powered by a 4.0-liter aluminum six-cylinder engine. The motor produces 485-horsepower at 7,500-rpm and is fitted to a six-speed sequential transmission. Stopping the Porsche are aluminum six-piston calipers on the front – while the rear is equipped with four-piston calipers. The GT3 Cup weighs just over 2,600-lbs.

The 2019 season kicks-off in May on the Victoria Day Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The series then participates at the prestigious venue Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as a support event for the Canadian Grand Prix. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will event will also include rounds of the American Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge championship. Races five and six will see teams return to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as part of the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix weekend, which features the WeatherTech Championship. Just a week later, drivers will compete at the Toronto Indy. In early August, teams will join their American counterparts again for a weekend at Road America. The final two races of the season will be held at a venue that the series has not visited since 2012, Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant.

Rounds five and six of the 2019 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada championship were contested on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s 2.459-mile ten-turn road course.

Leading the field is the pole-sitter and points leader, Roman De Angelis, in the No. 79 Mark Motors Racing Porsche GT3 Cup. On the outside of the front row is the second-fastest qualifier and winner of the opening race, Jeff Kingsley, driving the No. 16 Policaro Motorsport Porsche GT3 Cup.
The points leader Roman De Angelis started his winning streak in round two at the season opener. Since then, he had collected three consecutive victories. De Angelis topped the timesheets in the two practice sessions at the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix weekend and as expected, he did the same in qualifying. He led both Saturday and Sunday’s forty-five-minute contests flag-to-flag and increased his championship lead.
The only driver to beat the points leader, Roman De Angelis, this season is Jeff Kingsley. Kingsley was victorious in race one at CTMP. He qualified second for the first race of the weekend, but he lost a position to Patrick Dussault at the start. Kingsley battled back and finished second; this is his first podium since the season opener. On Sunday, he started in the second position but finished eighth after an early spin.
Parker Thompson, driving the No. 3 SCB Racing Porsche GT3 Cup, qualified fourth fastest for Saturday’s race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. During the contest, he was never in contention and lost fourth place to Marco Cirone. The next day, Thompson was gridded third. Ten minutes into the race, Jeff Kingsley spun, allowing Thompson to inherit second-place, which he would maintain to the checkered flag.

Marco Cirone has captured five Masters titles in six years. In qualifying for Saturday’s contest, he was seventh fastest but moved into fourth during the race. Cirone spun while attempting a pass for third; he recovered and maintained his position, which earned him the Masters victory. In round six, Cirone had to contend with Alan Metni until Metni encountered mechanical issues. After that, he claimed another class win.
Patrick Dussault made his series debut last season and captured his best result, a third-place, in round six at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. With a year’s experience behind him, Dussault already had three top-five finishes, two of which are podiums. The driver of the No. 77 Lauzon Autosport Porsche GT3 Cup finished third in the weekend’s first contest despite a challenge from Marco Cirone. In the finale, he collected another third-place.
