In 2017, the Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) was in its eleventh year.

In the offseason, the series announced two significant changes:

  • The first was a new relationship with Pirelli Tires Canada. The three-year partnership would make Pirelli the official tire supplier and presenting partner of the Canadian Touring Car Championship.
  • Secondly, the Grand Touring class would be called GT Sport. The new name was a better description for cars competing in this category.

The championship is being contested over six race weekends at four different tracks in Ontario and Quebec. The series opens in May on the Victoria Day Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). Following CTMP, teams would compete at Calabogie Motorsports Park, Circuit ICAR and Trois-Rivieres. The final two race weekends would see the championship return to CTMP and Circuit ICAR.

The series has three different classes:

  • Touring: This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed minimal performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the – Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic Si, Acura RSX and Hyundai Tiburon.
  • Super Touring: Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic body enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in this group include BMW, Subaru and Porsche.
  • GT Sport: The Ford Mustang is the most popular vehicle racing in this category. However, this class also includes cars such as the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Acura TLX, Toyota GT86, Ferrari 458 Challenge and Porsche Cayman GT4. Like Super Touring, some changes and modifications are permitted. Cars in this class are typically powered by six or eight-cylinder engines. Of the three groups, these cars produce the most horsepower.

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park hosted three rounds of the Canadian Touring Car Championship on the Labour Day weekend. During the event, drivers would compete in three forty-minute races around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course. Competitors would be attempting to gain the maximum amount of points with only two races remaining in the 2017 season.

  • The start of round eleven for the 2017 Canadian Touring Car Championship. Second fastest qualifier, Gary Kwok in the M&S Racing Honda Civic TCR gets the jump on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe of the pole-sitter, Bob Attrell. Before the end of the first lap, Attrell would move into the lead. Following these two are Andrew Danyliw in a Porsche Cayman GT4 and the Ford Mustang of the GT Sport point’s leader, Chris Sahakian.
At the start of the season, Bob Attrell’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe was fast but produced inconsistent results. In the opening round at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he finished eleventh in class. However, that changed at the Labour Day events as Attrell swept the weekend’s three races. He also moved from second to first in the GT Sport category standings with only two races remaining in the championship.
The 2017 GT Sport podium for round eleven at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. On the top step is Bob Attrell who would sweep the weekend with three victories. Taking the runner-up spot was the driver of the No. 66 M&S Racing Honda Civic TCR, Gary Kwok. The final position on the rostrum belonged to Porsche Cayman GT4 driver, Andrew Danyliw who scored his best finish of the season.
The Velocity Motorsports Club struggled early in the season with their new Honda Civic Si. Like Bob Attrell’s Hyundai it was quick but not reliable. But the crew’s efforts were rewarded on the Labour Day Weekend when the team’s driver, Scott Nicol won all three rounds and set a new lap record. Saturday’s victory was not without drama. A flat tire resulted in a pit stop during the race but Nicol was still able to win.
Super Touring competitor and class point’s leader, Eric Hochgeschurz appeared to be headed for a ‘hat trick.’ The driver of the No. 11 8Legs Racing BMW 330i won rounds ten and eleven. But on lap-9 of Sunday’s race, Hochgeshurz retired with a mechanical problem. Despite his failure to finish round twelve, Hochgeschurz maintained his championship lead over Jean-François Hevey.
The 2017 round eleven Canadian Touring Car Championship podium for the Super Touring category. In the center, scoring his second victory of the weekend and sixth of the season is Eric Hochgeschurz. On the left side of the rostrum is the runner-up, Jean-Francois Hevey. The final spot on the podium is occupied by the rookie, Jeff Kingsley.
The pace lap for weekend’s final race and seventeen competitors enter Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s last corner in anticipation of the Starter’s flag. On the pole is the Quaker State sponsored Hyundai Genesis Coupe of Bob Attrell. Sharing the front row with Attrell is the Honda Civic TCR driven by Gary Kwok. In the second row are Andrew Danyliw and the fastest qualifier in Super Touring, Eric Hochgeschurz.
Gary Kwok driving a Honda Civic TCR has had mixed results this season and entered the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park weekend third in the GT Sport class standings. Kwok qualified third for round ten but he retired after seven laps. In the Saturday and Sunday contests, he captured second overall and in the GT Sport category. Kwok’s results during the weekend left him just 142-points behind Chris Sahakian in the GT Sport standings.
Rookie, Jeff Kingsley scored his first Super Touring and overall victory in round five at ICAR. Entering the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park weekend, Kingsley was second in the Driver’s standings. For round ten, he qualified and finished third in class driving the No. 16 BMW M235iR. Kingsley scored another third on Saturday. In the final contest of the weekend, he failed to finish but is still second in the title chase.
Before the Labour Day weekend rounds at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park Andrew Danyliw had only entered two races and came away with a sixth in class. Danyliw fared much better at the Labour Day event. Driving the SCB Racing prepared Porsche Cayman GT4 in the GT Sport category he qualified fifth and finished third in the weekend’s first race. In rounds eleven and twelve, he succeeded in grabbing the final spot on the podium.
The No. 12 The Racing Company Porsche Cayman S was driven by Jean-Francois Hevey. Hevey entered the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park rounds trailing the Super Touring class leader, Eric Hochgeschurz. He had a good weekend scoring runner-up finishes on Friday and Saturday and inheriting the lead and win in the final race when Hochgeschurz retired. Despite the excellent results, he was not able to take the points lead.

To the right is the current class point’s leader and reigning champion, Michel Sallenbach. Between these two drivers is the driver of the Velocity Motorsports Club Honda Civic Si and race winner, Scott Nicol.
