This year’s Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin kicks off on the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Drivers will collect championship points during Saturday and Sunday’s forty-five-minute heat races. Each event on the 2014 calendar is a doubleheader race weekend. The series then travels to Calabogie Motorsports Park in mid-June for rounds three and four. Next on the schedule is the series most high-profile weekend when teams compete at Toronto’s Exhibition Place as a support event for the Honda Toronto Indy. This is followed by a trip to Quebec for the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Championships are decided during the final two races of the season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s Chevrolet Silverado 250 Weekend.

Drivers score points towards one of three classes. There is also a Masters division for drivers 45-years of age and older.

  • Platinum Cup – This category is for the 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup models. The GT3 Cup Porsche is based on the 911 street version.
  • Gold Cup – Older (2010 - 2013) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars compete in this division.
  • Silver Cup – This final group is for cars manufactured between 2005-1/2 -2009.

A 3.8-liter aluminum six-cylinder engine powers the current generation Porsche GT3 Cup. The motor produces 460-horsepower at 8,500-rpm and is fitted to a six-speed sequential transmission. Stopping the Porsche are aluminum six-piston calipers on the front – while the rear is equipped with four-piston calipers. The alloy rims on the front of the Porsche are 9.5J X 18 and use 24/64-18 Michelin tires. And, on the rear are 12J X 18 wheels with 30/68-18 tires. The GT3 Cup weighs just over 1,180-kg.

The opening rounds of the 2014 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s 2.459-mile ten-turn road course during the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend.

The pace lap for round two of the 2014 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Leading the field of nineteen starters through corner ten is the pole-sitter, Chris Green, in the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup. Sharing the front row with Green is Saturday’s winner, Scott Hargrove, driving the No. 69 OpenRoad Racing Porsche GT3 Cup. Behind the leaders are Spencer Pigot and Eitenne Borgeat.
Scott Hargrove’s first visit to CTMP was last year in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship, which he won. This season, Hargrove was driving Christian Chia’s No.69 Porsche GT3 Cup in a one-off appearance. He qualified on the pole for race one but lost the lead to Chris Green. However, Hargrove was able to reclaim the position and won. On Sunday, he started second and passed the leader, Green, on lap-2 for the victory.
Series rookie and Gold Cup competitor Jerimy Daniel recorded the fastest time in his class during the qualifying session; however, it was disallowed because he caused a red flag period. Daniel was lucky as his second quickest time put him on the category pole. In the first race of the weekend, he went flag-to-flag in the No. 75 TRC Porsche GT3 Cup for the Gold Cup win and would do the same the next day.
Last year’s runner-up returned to the 2014 season with Pfaff Motorsports driving the No. 9 Porsche GT3 Cup. Green qualified fourth for the opening round. He followed the second-fastest qualifier, Spencer Pigot, to move into the runner-up spot at the start of round one. Pigot was penalized and Green moved into the lead but could not hold-off Scott Hargrove and finished second. The finale ended with the same result.
Another driver to sweep his category was newcomer Chuck Harris. Harris competed in the Silver Cup division for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars manufactured between 2005-1/2 and 2009. He drove the No. 50 Alegra Motorsports prepared Porsche GT3 Cup. Harris finished sixteenth overall on Saturday and on Sunday, he was in the ninth position at the checkered flag. Both these results were good for the class victory.
Montreal’s Etienne Borgeat was in his third season of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada series. In 2012, Borgeat was the Platinum Cup runner-up in the final standings and finished fifth last year. In 2014, he was campaigning the familiar No. 2 GT Racing prepared Porsche GT3 Cup. In Saturday’s contest, Borgeat started and finished third after losing a position to Chris Green. In the finale, he finished in fourth place.
Last year Spencer Pigot entered four Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada events and claimed three podium results, one of which was a victory. Pigot returned this season driving the No. 21 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup and qualified on the outside of row one for the first contest. He jumped the start and was given a drive-through penalty - he finished sixth. In the finale, Pigot started and finished third.
On lap-11 of round two, the 2012 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada champion Jean-Frederick Laberge spun the No. 91 GT Racing Porsche GT3 Cup in Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s turn ten. With nowhere to go, Laberge was hit from behind by the No. 48 SCB Racing Porsche GT3 Cup of Ilker Starck. The damage to both cars was severe. The drivers were unhurt but unable to restart the race.
