The 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires offered racers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents at some of eastern Canada’s most widely recognized and well-established race tracks. The series provided amateur competitors with professionally organized events that would attract sponsors and fans. The success of the championship was reflected in the number of drivers who participated in race weekends. The average car count in 2009 per event was twenty-nine entries.

This 2010 schedule consists of seven race weekends at five different facilities. The format at each venue includes two races – generally, thirty-minutes in length. As has become tradition, the season kicks off on the Victoria Day long weekend at Mosport International Raceway. This is followed by the second of three stops at Mosport when the championship is a support event for the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Two weeks later, teams travel Quebec and compete at the ICAR Mirabel Airport circuit. Then it is back to Ontario for the series premiere event – Exhibition Place, Toronto, with the IndyCar Championship. Then teams make their only stop at on the street circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The penultimate rounds are conducted at Mosport during the Grand Prix of Mosport. Series champions will be crowned when teams make their second visit to ICAR in September.

In 2010, there were two classes. To help fans distinguish between the groups, the cars are fitted with different coloured windshield banners.

  • Touring - (Blue Window Banner) – This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed a minimal amount of performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Sentra and Acura Integra.
  • Super Touring – (Yellow Window Banner) - Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in the group include BMW, Subaru and Audi.

Rounds nine and ten of the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires was held at Trois-Rivieres. Drivers would compete in two thirty-minute contests around the very tight ten-turn 2.462-km temporary street circuit.

The start of round ten for the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship at Trois-Rivieres. Leading the field into corner one is the second place starter, Sasha Anis, in the No. 87 G1 Racing Hyundai Genesis. Tucking in behind Anis is his teammate, Bob Attrell, who was gridded fourth for the beginning of the contest. Also at the front of the grid are the Lombardi Hondas of Benjamin DiStaulo and Nigel Heron.
The top Super Touring competitor at Trois-Rivieres was Sasha Anis. Anis, driving the No. 87 G1 Racing prepared Hyundai Genesis, qualified on the outside of the front row for the weekend’s first contest. He chased the pole-sitter, Marc-Antoine Camirand, in the Camrirand Competition BMW Z3 Coupe to a runner-up finish. On Sunday, Camirand retired early, but Anis held off a hard-charging Mathieu Audette for the victory.
The Durabond-Compass 360 Racing team entered three very fast Touring class Honda Civic Si at Trois-Rivieres. The No. 72 Honda was driven by Canadian Touring Car veteran, Anthony Rapone. Rapone topped the Touring category round nine qualifying and started eighteenth overall. He would win the race, followed by his teammates. On Sunday, Rapone started on the class pole but finished in the runner-up spot.
Another member of the Durabond-Compass 360 Racing contingent was Karl Thomson, who piloted the No. 71 Honda Civic Si. In the first race of the weekend, Thomson qualified second in class, behind his teammate, Anthony Rapone. During the contest, he chased Rapone and finished second. In the finale, Thomson started behind Rapone but was able to pass him and win by a margin of 1.099-seconds.
A local favourite, Marc-Antoine Camirand, performed as expected on Saturday. Camirand qualified on the overall and Super Touring pole in the No. 96 Camirand Competition BMW Z3 Coupe. He would lead the race flag-to-flag for his third win of the season. Camirand opened 2010 with a pair of victories at Mosport. In the weekend’s final event, he did not fare as well and retired on lap-3.

Another Quebec competitor that fans at Trois-Rivieres were expecting to deliver excellent results was Mathieu Audette. The driver of the No. 12 Audette Racing Acura RSX Type-S qualified fourth fastest for the weekend’s first race. Unfortunately, Audette finished thirty-first overall. Starting from the rear of the grid for round ten, he charged through the field and captured the runner-up position.
The third member of the Durabond-Compass 360 Racing team was American Greg Liefooghe. The former Go-Kart racer, also participating in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge with Compass360 Racing. In rounds nine and ten at Trois-Rivieres, Liefooghe started behind his teammates, Anthony Rapone and Karl Thomson. He chased them to a third-place finish in the Touring category both days.
It was also a productive weekend for Sasha Anis’ teammate, Bob Attrell. The Hyundai New Car Dealer drove the No. 88 Hyundai Genesis with backing from Castrol and Hyundai Canada. Attrell was sixteenth fastest in the qualifying session for round nine, but moved up the race order and captured the Super Touring podium’s final position. On Sunday, he missed repeating his performance by one position.
David Ciekiewicz took over the seat in the No. 36 Donington Wenzel Motorsport Subaru WRX STi vacated by Richard Boake. Cieklewicz didn’t have any victories in 2010, but he did have three podium results entering the Trois-Rivieres rounds. In qualifying for the weekend’s first race, Ciekiewicz started second, but issues during the contest relegated him to a thirteenth place in Super Touring. On Sunday, he finished third.
