The 2009 Quebec Formula Ford championship, called the Formula Tour 1600, kicks off in late May with the first of three doubleheaders at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. Next on the calendar are rounds three and four at ICAR. The Formula Tour 1600 drivers will return to Mont-Tremblant for their second doubleheader in July. The next stop is at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres for races seven and eight. The penultimate weekend takes place at Le Circuit Gilles Villeneuve with NASCAR. The season ends in late September at Mont-Tremblant.

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine, which produces120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Two of the most successful cars are constructed in Canada – the Aero and CMV. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs., with the driver.

Rounds seven and eight of the Formula Tour 1600 series were held at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Drivers would compete o n the eleven-turn 1.53-mile temporary street circuit for twenty-laps.

The field heads into corner one for round seven of the 2009 Formula Tour 1600. Leading the pack of twenty-two starters is the pole-sitter, Olivier Bonnet, in the No. 1 LM Scuderia prepared Vector MG93. On the outside of Bonnet is the other front-row qualifier, in the No. 94 RDS sponsored CMV, Didier Schraenen. Behind Bonnet is his brother, Michel, who qualified third fastest in the No. 2 Vector MG93.
2007 was the last time the Formula Tour 1600 raced at Trois-Rivieres. At that event, the winner was Olivier Bonnet. Bonnet was still quick when the series returned this year. He captured the pole for race one in the No. 1 Vector MG93 but could not hold-off his brother, Michel, and finished in the runner-up spot. On Sunday, the reigning champion started second but redeemed himself with a victory.
Second in the title chase last season was Michel Bonnet, the brother of the champion Olivier. They both drove LM Scuderia Vector MG93. Olivier opened the season with a victory, but Michel was yet to capture his first win of 2009. He qualified in the third position round seven and was in first place after twenty-laps of racing. The next day, Michel started on the pole but could not hold-off Didier Schraenen or his brother.
The veteran Didier Schraenen had two Canadian Formula Ford championships and a pair of victories at Trois-Rivieres. Schraenen started the weekend by qualifying on the outside of the front row. He was in contention until he crashed on the final lap of Saturday’s race. The finale provided Schraenen with an opportunity to address his race one incident and he did. After starting twelfth, Schraenen finished second.
Xavier Coupal made his first start of the 2009 Formula Tour 1600 season at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Coupal proved to be a quick study and was fourth fastest for the weekend’s first contest driving the No. 05 Mortimer Racing prepared Van Diemen RF01. With the retirement of Didier Schraenen on the final lap, he earned a third-place finish. Unfortunately, Coupal retired in round eight.
This was Marcel Lafontaine’s tenth season competing in Quebec’s Formula Ford series. Entering round seven and eight of 2009, the driver of the No. 27 Van Diemen RF01 had three podium results, one of which was a victory at ICAR. During the qualifying session for race one, Lafontaine was sixth fastest and finished fourth in the race. The next day, he started in the fourth position and earned another fourth-place.
Rookie sensation Jerimy Daniel qualified second fastest in his first Formula Tour 1600 event but retired when his No. 01 Mygale SJ02 ran out of fuel. With a lesson learned, Daniel racked up an impressive record heading into Trois-Rivieres – one victory and three runner-up results. Unfortunately, he was not able to match the pace of the leaders in rounds seven and eight and went home with a fifth and seventh-place finish.
