The 2009 Formula 2000 Championship is an open-wheel series for Formula 2000 race cars organized by Formula Race Promotions. Formula Race Promotions was formed in 2006, with their race weekends being sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America.

The cars competing in the Formula 2000 Championship Series conform to the Sports Club of America’s (SCCA) Formula Continent class. They are single-seat, rear-engine, open-wheel vehicles constructed with a tube frame chassis. Manufacturers producing series chassis include Carbir, Mygale, Tatuus, Piper and Citation, but the most popular choice is Van Diemen. The suspensions are independent – both front and rear. Shock absorbers and sway bars are adjustable. All competitors use the older 2.0-liter SOHC four-cylinder or, the newer Zetec Ford engine. A four-speed, non-synchro gearbox is used. Sequential transmissions are not permitted.

The series is open to all competitors with an SCCA National or SCCA Pro Racing license.

In addition to Hoosier Tires, the championship receives support from RTS Racing Wheels, PI Research, Taylor Race Engineering, Intercomp Racing Systems, Sunoco and GTP Racing Components.

The championship consists of six doubleheader weekends, each contested on road courses. The season begins in April at Virginia International Raceway and ends with the final two races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

  • April 10-11 - Virginia International Raceway
  • May 22-25 - Lime Rock Park
  • June 12-14 - Mosport International Raceway
  • July 2-5 - Watkins Glen International
  • July 19-16 - Summit Point
  • August 13-16 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

Rounds five and six of the 2009 Formula 2000 Championship were held during the High Octane event at Mosport International Raceway. Drivers would compete on the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course in two eighteen-lap contests.

Chris Miller, who finished fourth in last year’s Formula 2000 Championship, drove the No. 85 JDC Motorsports prepared Van Diemen RF08. Heading into Mosport, he led the points chase with a victory at VIR and two runner-up results at Lime Rock. Miller qualified second fastest and when the pole-sitter Remy Audette encountered issues, he inherited the win. On Sunday, Miller finished second after starting first.
Matthew Inge also participated in the 2008 Formula 2000 Championship and finished seventh in the final standings. He returned to the series driving the No. 02 St. Clair Motorsports Van Diemen RF08. Inge opened his 2009 campaign with a runner-up result at Virginia International Raceway. He would finish on the podium at Mosport International with another second-place result and a victory.
Brazilian Fabio Orsolon drove the No. 26 Alegra Motorsports Van Diemen RF03. Last year Orsolon finished second in the Skip Barber National Karting Scholarship Shoot Out. His season got off to a slow start as he adapted to the Formula 2000 car. However, Orsolon finished fourth in the round preceding Mosport International Raceway. Races five and six would see him earn a pair of third-place results.
Remy Audette had more miles around Mosport International Raceway than any competitor in this year’s series and was expected to do well. As expected, the driver of the No. 21 Dimension Doors / NOVATECH sponsored Van Diemen RF08 qualified on the pole for the weekend’s first contest. However, the race did not go as planned and Audette finished fourth. This was followed up with another fourth-place result on Sunday.
Rookie Benjamin Searcy joined the Formula 2000 Championship after participating in last year’s Skip Barber National series. This season Searcy was driving the No. 10 Z-Sports Midwest Van Diemen RF02. He collected wins in race one at Virginia International Raceway and Lime Rock Park. At Mosport, he qualified eighth and finished fifth on Saturday. In the weekend’s finale, Searcy started fifth and finished sixth.
