The 2008 Formula 2000 Championship, presented by Hoosier Tires, is an open-wheel series for Formula 2000 race cars. The category is a support event for National Auto Sport Association, American Le Mans Series, Champ Car World Series and SCCA Pro Racing.

The cars competing in the Formula 2000 Championship Series conform to the Sports Club of America’s (SCCA) Formula Continent class. They are single-seat, rear-engine, open-wheel vehicles constructed with a tube frame chassis. Manufacturers producing series chassis include Carbir, Mygale, Tatuus, Piper and Citation, but the most popular choice is Van Diemen. The suspensions are independent – both front and rear. Shock absorbers and sway bars are adjustable. All competitors use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ford engine. A four-speed, non-synchro gearbox is used. Sequential transmissions are not permitted.

The series is open to all competitors with an SCCA National or SCCA Pro Racing license.

In addition to Hoosier Tires, the championship receives support from RTS Racing Wheels, PI Research, Taylor Race Engineering, Intercomp Racing Systems, Sunoco and GTP Racing Components.

The championship consists of seven doubleheader weekends, each contested on road courses. The season begins in April at Virginia International Raceway and ends with the final two races at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

  • April 18-20 - Virginia International Raceway
  • May 9-10 - Road Atlanta
  • June 13-15 - Watkins Glen International
  • July 11-13 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • August 1-3 - Road America
  • August 22-24 - Mosport International Raceway
  • September 19-21 - New Jersey Motorsports Park

Rounds eleven and twelve of the 2008 Formula 2000 Championship presented by Hoosier Tires were held at Mosport International Raceway during the American Le Mans Series weekend. Drivers would compete on the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

Anders Krohn entered rounds eleven and twelve with a comfortable points lead. Krohn collected victories at VIR, Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio. He put the No. 9 Andersen Racing Van Diemen RF08 on the pole for race one at Mosport. Conor Daly led early before being passed by Krohn for the win. Starting from the pole on Sunday, he went flag to flag for the victory. The results were enough for Krohn to secure the 2008 title.
Conor Daly raced with Brian Graham Racing in last year’s Ontario Formula Ford Championship. This season he was competing in the Skip Barber National Championship, but he had room in his schedule to join his former Formula Ford team for the F2000 weekend at Mosport. He qualified on the outside of the front row both days, driving the No. 2 Van Diemen RF03. Daly would collect a pair of runner-up finishes.
Quebec’s Remy Audette missed the rounds at Road Atlanta and Road America. However, Audette collected podium finishes at Virginia International Raceway and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Driving the No. 21 Audette Racing Van Diemen RF08, he qualified third for the weekend’s first contest and earned the final spot on the rostrum. On Sunday, Audette started seventh and finished in the sixth position.
Kyle Marcelli won the Ontario Formula Ford Championship last season with Brian Graham Racing. He returned to the team this year, driving the No. 1 Van Diemen RF03 in the Formula 2000 Championship. Marcelli’s high point this season was a win at Road America. He qualified fifth for Saturday’s race at Mosport and joined the leaders but finished sixth after developing a push. Marcelli ended the weekend with a third place.
Andersen Racing’s second entry in the Formula 2000 Championship was the No. 6 Van Diemen RF08 driven by Jonny Baker. Baker opened his 2008 campaign with second and third-place finishes at Virginia International Raceway and collected a win in round eight at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He qualified and finished fourth in Saturday’s contest at Mosport. Baker delivered the same results in the finale.
