Formula BMW made its European debut in 2002 to provide a complete foundation for a young driver's career.

All drivers in the series can take part in the BMW Education and Coaching Program, which includes:

  • Driving Techniques and Tactics
  • Vehicle Dynamics and Chassis Set-up
  • Fitness Training and Nutrition
  • Media and Public Relations
  • Sponsorship and Sports Management

Some of the successful drivers that have completed in the series include Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Christian Klien and Timo Glock.

The Formula BMW was sketched and modeled by DesignworksUSA. The car's body is inspired by the BMW Formula 1 shape. It has a carbon-fiber tub that exceeds FIA safety stands and the bodywork is made from a Kevlar composite. All drivers compete in a Mygale FB02.

The Mygale FB02 has Sachs SP3 adjustable shock absorbers and Eibach coil springs. The suspension is a push rod double wishbone design. The car also has aluminum OZ Racing wheels 8" X13" on the front and 10" X13" on the rear. The championship uses Michelin tires.

The 1300-lb Mygale FB02 is powered by a K1200RS BMW motorcycle engine (124EA). The four-cylinder double overhead camshaft motor has four valves per cylinder and a displacement of 1171cc. The liquid-cooled unit produces 140 bhp. Power is transferred through a Sachs single-plate clutch and a six-speed sequential Hewland gearbox.

The cars can be purchased from BMW Motorsport for $69,500 plus sales tax and import fees.

The first Formula BMW USA race was held in 2004 and sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association.

The 2007 schedule consisted of fourteen rounds at seven circuits.

The 2007 Formula BMW USA Championship opening two rounds were held at Miller Motorsports Park. Drivers would race around the twenty-three turn 4.486-mile road course – the longest in North America.

Last year's rookie champion, Daniel Morad, leads nineteen Formula BMW USA drivers through Miller Motorsports Park's 'The Attitudes' corner for round one of the 2007 season. Morad, who qualified second in the No. 70 EuroInternational Formula BMW, would capture the win. The next day he started and finished in the runner-up position. Morad left Utah on top of the driver standings.
Successful Mexican kart racer Esteban Gutierrez made his series debut in round one at Miller Motorsports Park. In 2007, he drove the No. 7 Team Autotecnica Formula BMW with backing from Multigama. Gutierrez adapted quickly to the Formula BMW and started Saturday's contest on the pole. Unfortunately, a poor start resulted in a fourth-place result. In race two, he redeemed himself with a flag-to-flag victory.
Another series newcomer was Canadian Jeffrey Petriello. Petriello was also quick in his debut. During qualifying for the opening round, he was third fastest in the No. 13 Team KMA Racing Formula BMW. Petriello took advantage of Esteban Gutierrez's poor start-to-finish second to Daniel Morad. On Sunday, he was gridded third, but it was his turn to have issues and Petriello finished in the sixth spot.
Series rookie American Alexander Rossi drove the No. 16 Hearn Motorsports Formula BMW. Last season the former karter competed in the Skip Barber National Championship and was third in the final standings. Rossi started race one in the fourth spot and benefitted from Esteban Gutierrez's mistake to finish third. In the second contest, he started seventh and finished fourth.
Steven Guerrero returned for a second season, driving the No. 90 HBR Motorsport USA Formula BMW. Last year, the Columbian finished twenty-fourth in the championship, with his best result being an eighth at Mosport. His season didn't get off to a great start, as he qualified sixth and finished eighth. However, Guerrero started fourth in the finale and earned the final spot on the podium.
