1991 marked the twenty-sixth season of the Sports Car Club of America s Trans Am Series.
In 1989, the series returned to its roots as a championship for production-based North American vehicles
gone were the turbocharged Merkurs and all-wheel-drive Audis.
Trans Am rules require that vehicles to be constructed with a purpose-built tube frame chassis.
The bodies are made of composites, such as carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass.
The rules stipulate that the cars should maintain the recognizable external features of the manufacturer's
model while providing flares necessary to keep the tires inside the bodywork. SCCA Pro Racing uses body
templates to ensure the shape of cars was within designated tolerances.
Cars are required to use the stock windshield or an approved alternative,
which has to be mounted in the original location and at the original angle.
The rules also dictate the use of the stock taillights, which are often the only production parts on the vehicles.
All cars are required to use an American-based engine.
The rules allow a 335 cubic inch or 358 cubic inch 9:1 V8 engines with a car weight of 2700-lbs.
Another choice is a V6 with a 275 cubic inch engine weighing 2500-lbs. But the most popular choice was a 310 cubic inch motor.
All options must be fitted with a 4150 Holley carburetor.
The fourteen race season began in May at Sonoma Raceway and the championship ends on October 20 at Texas Motor Speedway.

As he has done so many times this year, the points leader, Scott Sharp, started on the pole in the No. 33 Duracell Chevrolet Camaro.
Sharp shot into the lead at the drop of the green flag with the third-place starter, Les Lindley, on his bumper.
On lap 21, Sharp lost the top spot to Lindley. He moved back into first place on the thirty-fifth circuit and won his fifth race of the season.
Sharp increased his point lead by forty-seven markers.

Les Lindley, the third-place starter, finished in the runner-up position.
Collecting the final spot on the podium was Darren Brassfield. Brassfield campaigned the V6-powered No. 5 Neo Life Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Earlier this year, he earned victories at Sears Point and the Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport, leaving him third in the points chase.
At Mosport, Brassfield qualified seventh, worked his way forward, and moved into third place on lap 47.

Darren Brassfield’s teammate was Paul Gentilozzi. Gentilozzi drove the No. 7 Rocketsports-prepared Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with support from Olivetti.
He started on the outside of the front row but lost the position on lap 2 to Les Lindley.
Gentilozzi remained in contention and moved into first place during the mandatory fuel stops.
He held the top position for four laps but would cross the finish line in fourth place.

In 1989, Ron Fellows won his first Trans-Am race at Mosport Park.
The local favourite was entered in the No. 4 AER / MacKenzie Financial Ford Mustang.
Unfortunately, it was a disappointing season with his best results being runner-up finishes at Mexico and Trois-Rivieres.
During practice at Mosport, Fellows suffered an engine failure in practice, which required him to start last.
He advanced during the race and earned the Hard-Charger award with a fifth-place finish.

Scott Sharp’s teammate was IMSA series veteran Jack Baldwin. Baldwin joined the Trans-Am championship in 1990 and won the Rookie of the Year title.
Entering round eleven at Mosport Park, he was second in the standings with a record that included seven top-five results.
At Mosport, Baldwin started in the sixth position. During the race, he joined the leaders and ran as high as second place before receiving the checkered flag in sixth.

Irv Hoerr piloted the No. 15 Kenwood / Olivetti Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
In 1988 and 1989, he was the Trans-Am series runner-up. Hoerr was third in the standings with victories at Dallas’ Addison Airport, Portland International Raceway and the Denver Street Circuit.
He was gridded fifth for the fifty-lap event at Mosport Park. Unfortunately, Hoerr was not competitive in the race and finished in eleventh place.
The result dropped him to fourth in the points chase.
