In the early 1980s Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) directors were searching for a solution to address the rising costs of racing.
The result was the Sports Renault.
A low-cost sports racer was developed and manufactured by Renault / Jeep Sport USA under direction of retired racer Vic Elford. The Sports Renault was designed by Roy Lunn, who was head of engineering at American Motors from 1971 to 1987. The Sports Renault sold $9,995 and was an immediate success with over 200 orders received by January 1984. Although Renault / Jeep withdrew from the program in 1989 this inexpensive sports racer continued to be a very popular class. In 1993 the original Renaut units were replaced with Ford drivetrains and the category was renamed Spec Racer Ford. A third generation was announced in 2013 with an upgraded Ford engine package. It is called the Spec Racer Ford GEN3 or simply GEN3 and is a National class that competes at the annual SCCA Runoffs. Below is the brochure that introduced prosective buyers to the Sports Renault.
