Advanced Vehicle Systems was founded in 1974 by Don Nicols. The company's cars were called Shadows. The first creation was the Mark 1, which was entered in the 1968 Can Am series.

The team would partner with Universal Oil Products Company (UOP). UOP was founded to research, develop, and license processes for the petroleum industry, which was a good fit with Nicols' Advanced Vehicle Systems.

In 1973, the team entered the Formula One World Championship. Drivers Jackie Oliver and George Follmer competed in the Shadow DN1. The following season, the team campaigned the DN3 in Formula One and DN4 in the Can Am series.

Below is the content from the 1974 UOP Shadow Media Guide.

Peter Revson and Jean-Pierre Jarier were hired for the Formula One team. Unfortunately, Revson died in a practice accident at the South African Grand Prix, and the team withdrew from the event. Revson was initially replaced by Brian Redman, who competed in the next three rounds. Bertil Roos drove for the team at the Swedish Grand Prix. Nicols retained Tom Pryce for the remainder of the year.

Jackie Oliver and Follmer were assigned to the Can Am Series.

It was a difficult season for the Formula One team. In addition to the loss of Peter Revson, the team experienced many retirements caused by mechanical failures and accidents. The highlight for Shadow was Jean-Pierre Jarier's third-place result at the Grand Prix of Monaco. He would finish fourteenth in the World Drivers Championship standings and Shadow finished eighth in the Formula One Manufacturers Championship.
