Now in its thirty-second season, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) is responsible for sanctioning two divisions: Modified and Hot Rod.

The Modified division, which receives backing from Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC, draws many competitors and features some exciting races. Due to COVID 19, the last couple of years have resulted in fewer races and limits on spectator attendance. In 2022, the Federal and Provincial governments have listed many of the restrictions, which means OSCAAR has a full calendar and will see the return of fans.

There are thirteen races on the 2022 OSCAAR Modified schedule.

  • May 21-22 - Sunset Speedway
  • June 18 - Sauble Speedway
  • June 25 - Sunset Speedway
  • July 1 - Delaware Speedway
  • July 2 - Delaware Speedway
  • July 23 - Sunset Speedway
  • July 30 - Peterborough Speedway
  • August 20 - Sauble Speedway
  • August 27 - Flamboro Speedway
  • September 17-18 - Sunset Speedway
  • September 24 - Delaware Speedway
  • October 1 - Flamboro Speedway
  • October 7-9 - Peterborough Speedway

The cars competing in this class are purpose-built open-wheel vehicles. The Modifieds use a steel tube frame chassis, which is no less than 1-3/4-inch outside diameter with 0.095-inch wall thickness. Bodies are made of sheet metal, with the driver’s compartment and engine bay covered. The cars may be any make or model, but they tend to have little to no resemblance to their road-going counterparts.

The engine option selected by the car owner determines the weight of the vehicle. A Modified using 350-horsepower Crate Engine is the lightest at 2,600 pounds and 2,775 pounds is required for a car powered by a Built Motor. Weight may be added or removed depending on the choice of transmission.

Many of the other rules governing the OSCAAR Modified class are for driver safety and to keep costs down.

The sixth round of the 2022 Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified Series was held at Sunset Speedway on July 23. The results from four heat races on the 0.333-mile asphalt oval would determine the starting order for the forty-lap feature event.

A field of sixteen drivers line up on Sunset Speedway's back straight for the start of round six of the 2022 Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified Series. The No. 78 Majors Pharmacy sponsored Modified of Herb Walters is on the pole. Next to Walters is Dale Reinhart driving the No. 51 SGR Plumbing Modified. Row two is occupied by Jake Watson in the No. 88 Modified and the No. 14 Modified of A.J. Emms.
Andy Kamrath dominated this season's Queenston Chevrolet Buick OSCAAR Modified Series until the doubleheader weekend at Delaware Speedway, when he was involved in an incident that damaged his car extensively. The team rebuilt the No. 35 London Recreational Racing in time for round six at Sunset Speedway. Kamrath started sixth in the feature and grabbed the lead for the win on lap-17.
For the second consecutive event this year at Sunset, A.J. Emms finished in the runner-up position. Emms drove the No. 14 BAE Environmental Modified and collected first and fourth place finishes in the heat races. He started the finale in the fourth position but moved past Dale Reinhart for the lead on lap-3. Soon after, Emms was challenged by Andy Kamrath. Unable to defend against Kamrath, he finished second.
T.J. Edwards went one step further and collected his third consecutive third-place result at Sunset Speedway in as many starts. During the heat races, Edwards earned third and fifth place finishes. The No. 34 Steward's Farm Equipment sponsored Modified started the forty-lap feature in the fifth position. After a battle with Herb Walters, he moved to fourth and passing Dale Reinhart on lap-10 gave Edwards a third-place finish.
The No. 51 Modified was driven by Dale Reinhart with support from SGR Plumbing and Robvale Farms. Heading into the feature, Reinhart finished fifth in heat one and second in heat three. These results saw him gridded on the outside of the front row for the evening's final event. At the start, Reinhart took the lead from Herb Walters. On lap-3, he began dropping down the race order and would finish in the fourth position.
Finishing in the fifth spot for round six of the 2022 Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified Series at Sunset Speedway was Marshall Schrenk. He finished sixth in the second heat race and collected third place in the fourth heat. Schrenk raced the No. 22 Sloan Stone Design / London Music Hall sponsored Modified. In the finale, Schrenk was gridded eighth and finished in the fifth position.
Luke Gignac's last visit to Sunset Speedway ended with the No. 99 Port's Cooling & Heating Modified being the first retirement in the feature. Round six would provide Gignac with an opportunity to redeem himself. Gignac was in the eighth starting position for the feature and finished in the seventh spot. He was strong in both heat races earning a victory and third-place result.
