Due to COVID 19, the last couple of years have resulted in fewer races and limits on spectator attendance. In 2022, the federal and provincial governments have lifted many of the restrictions, which means that the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series has a full race calendar and will see the return of fans.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends with each event hosting three rounds.

  • SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • Pinty’s CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

On the weekend of September 17-18, the final three rounds of the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. Drivers would compete in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

Lap one through Moss corner for the first race of the weekend. Leading field of twenty-nine starters is the pole-sitter, Connor Clubine, in the No. 6 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ15. Behind Clubine are two of this year's title contenders. In the No. 66, Mygale SJ13 is his teammate and the other front-row starter, Jake Cowden. And the fourth fastest qualifier, William Ferguson, is driving the No. 2 BGR Piper DL7.
Jake Cowden clinched the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship at the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. Cowden missed the second weekend of the series to compete in a support event at the Canadian Grand Prix. However, on the final weekend, the driver of the No. 66 Britain West Motorsport prepared Mygale SJ13 to collect a runner-up result on Saturday and a pair of victories on Sunday to claim the title.
Britain West Motorsport's Connor Clubine started from the pole for Saturday's race in the No. 6 Mygale SJ15. Clubine would trade the lead with his teammate, Jake Cowden, but was in first place when the race was halted after five laps. On Sunday, he collected a runner-up result and a fourth in the weekend's final contest. Clubine would finish third in the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship.
As expected, the F1600B Craig Willis topped the timesheets in practice and qualifying. However, Willis has only participated in a limited number of races this year. He qualified eleventh overall for race one and claimed the class victory. The next morning, Willis encountered issues with the No. 99 Aero II and finished second to Steve Bodrug. He was back on form for the finale and earned the category win.
The start of the final race for the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. At the head of the twenty-six car field is the No.66 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ13 of the pole-sitter, Jake Cowden. His teammate and third-place qualifier, Callum Baxter, directly behind Cowden, is driving the No. 65 Mygale SJ14. Beside Baxter is another driver out of the Britain West Motorsport stable, Connor Clubine, in the No. 6 Mygale SJ15.
Series veteran, Steve Bodrug, was able to capitalize on Craig Willis' problems on Sunday morning to take the F1600B win. Bodrug started eleventh overall and grabbed the class lead on lap 3. He would finish sixth overall. He finished second in his category the previous day, piloting the No. 41 Van Diemen RF91. Bodrug ended the season with a twelfth-place result and third in the B category to finish second in the final standings.
Californian William Ferguson grabbed the points lead early in the season when the Britain West Motorsport team skipped the VARAC weekend. Despite his championship lead, Jake Cowden was closing the points gap. He started fourth in race one but was able to finish third. Sunday morning was his undoing as he failed to finish. A runner-up result in the finale left him five points behind Cowden in the title chase.
Sam Baker, driving the No. 51 Kerr Industries / Baker Racing Spectrum 012b, was often in the top ten when the checkered flag fell but had not yet collected a podium result this season. Baker qualified ninth for the weekend's first contest and finished sixth. The next morning he was gridded fifth and moved to second before losing a position to Connor Clubine. Baker ended the year with a sixth in F1600A.
Britain West Motorsport driver Callum Baxter scored his best result, prior to the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races weekend, at Shannonville Motorsport Park. At that event, Baxter finished third in the No. 65 Mygale SJ14. He repeated that performance in the final round of the season. In the other two races, Baxter finished fourth. He was tied for fifth overall in the final standings and won the Rookie of the Year title.
