Due to COVID 19, the last couple of years have resulted in fewer races and limits on spectator attendance. In 2022, the federal and provincial governments have lifted many of the restrictions, which means that the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series has a full race calendar and will see the return of fans.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends with each event hosting three rounds.

  • SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • Pinty’s CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

Race seven, eight and nine of the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship were conducted at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races weekend. Drivers would compete in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

The start of Saturday's for race the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. Leading the field of twenty-nine competitors through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park's corner two is the pole-sitter Megan Gilkes in the No. 63 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ12. Behind Gilkes are her teammates, Jake Cowden, who qualified second fastest, driving the No. 66 Mygale SJ13 and the No. 6 Mygale SJ15 of the third place starter, Connor Clubine.
The podium for the F1600A class this weekend belonged to Britain West Motorsport. Serving notice first was Connor Clubine. Clubine qualified third fastest for the weekend's first race and grabbed the lead and victory on the final lap. On Sunday morning, he bounced up and down the lap chart but would finish where he started in third place. In the finale, Clubine passed Jake Cowden and William Sullivan to finish second.
Claiming the F1600B category win on Saturday was Bill Tebbutt driving the No. 82 Blue Dread Racing Van Diemen RF90. He qualified fifteenth overall and second in class. When the category leader, Mike Dodd, encountered an issue, Tebbutt inherited first-place and the victory. He started and finished second in race eight. Tebbutt ended the event by advancing five positions, but it was only good enough for a fourth in F1600B.
The start of race eight during the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races weekend. Leading the field of twenty-seven Toyo Tires F1600 drivers into corner one for the first lap is the pole-sitter, William Ferguson, in the No. 2 BGR / Piper Race Cars Piper DL7. Behind Ferguson are four entries from the Britain West Motorsport stable – Megan Gilkes, Jake Cowden, Connor Clubine and Callum Baxter.
In the first race on Sunday morning, it was Jake Cowden's turn to stand on the top step of the podium for Britain West Motorsport. Cowden started fourth but moved to the lead mid-race and traded the top spot with his teammate Megan Gilkes before claiming the win. He started the weekend with a third-place finish in race seven. Cowden ended the event, starting on the outside of the front row and finishing second.
Andrew Mason earned the F1600B victory in the weekend's second contest. The driver of the No. 32 Mason Racing Van Diemen RF90 advanced four positions and inherited the win and first place when Mike Dodd encountered problems. The previous day, Mason was the hard charger moving up seven spots to finish second in class. He ended the event by grabbing the final spot on the category podium.
The first lap through Moss corner for the weekend's final Toyo Tire F1600 contest. The pole-sitter, William Sullivan, leads the field, driving the No. 2 BGR / Piper Race Cars Piper DL7. Behind Sullivan are three Britain West Motorsport entries. The first in line is Megan Gilkes in the No. 63 Mygale SJ12, followed by Jake Cowden in the No. 66 Mygale SJ13 and the No. 6 Mygale SJ15 of Connor Clubine.
It was Megan Gilkes's turn to win one for Britain West Motorsport on Sunday afternoon. Gilkes, driving the No. 63 Mygale SJ12, dropped as low as fourth-place before grabbing the lead on the last lap for the victory. In the opening contest of the weekend, she qualified on the pole but lost the top spot on the final lap to finish in the runner-up position. On Sunday morning, Gilkes was gridded fourth and finished second.
After the first qualifying session, it appeared that the driver of the No. 24 John Dodd Motorsports Van Diemen RF94, Mike Dodd, may go unchallenged in the F1600B class. Dodd was four positions ahead of the next competitor in his category. Unfortunately, issues in the weekend's first two races caused him to fall out of contention. However, in the finale, Dodd redeemed himself with the category victory.
