Due to COVID 19, the last couple of years have resulted in fewer races and limits on spectator attendance. In 2022, the federal and provincial governments have lifted many of the restrictions, which means that the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series has a full race calendar and will see the return of fans.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends with each event hosting three rounds.

  • SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • Pinty’s CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The second weekend of the 2022 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was conducted at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix event. Drivers would compete in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

By the end of the VARAC weekend, William Ferguson had five victories in six 2022 Toyo F1600 starts. However, the wins at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park did not come easy. The driver of the No. 2 BGR Piper DL7 battled with Connor Wagland and James Lindsay before claiming the top spot on Saturday. The two contests on the following day were no different, with the three drivers fighting for first place.
The start of the weekend’s second Toyo Tires F1600 race and twenty-one competitors enter Canadian Tire Motorsports corner one. The points leader and pole-sitter William Ferguson leads the field in the No. 2 BGR prepared Piper DL7. Behind Ferguson are his two main combatants from the weekend’s first race – James Lindsay in the No. 35 Van Diemen RF01 and the No. 23 Piper DL7 driven by Connor Wagland.
A scheduling conflict meant that local F1600 competitors had to choose between racing at the VARAC weekend or as a support event at the Canadian Grand Prix. The latter would mean a serious hit to their title aspirations. One of the teams making the trip to Montreal was Britain West Motorsport. Benefitting from their decision was Connor Wagland, who by the end of the VARAC weekend was second in the standings.
William Ferguson collected three victories at the VARAC event in the F1600A category and Craig Willis delivered the same results in the F1600B class. However, Willis was dominant and never challenged like Ferguson. Driving the No. 99 Willis Racing Aero II, Willis finished fourth overall in the weekend’s first contest. On Sunday morning, he placed fifth, but in the finale, Willis captured the final position on the overall podium.
The first lap through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s Moss corner for the weekend’s final event. Leading the pack in the No. 23 Piper DL7 of the pole-sitter, Connor Wagland. Behind Wagland is James Lindsay driving the No. 35 Van Diemen RF01. In the third spot is Saturday’s F1600A winner and the current points leader, William Ferguson. Fourth in the order is F1600B competitor Craig Willis in the No. 99 Aero II.
Perhaps, the best of the rest in the F1600B category was Andrew Mason piloting the No. 32 Mason Racing Van Diemen RF90. Mason opened the weekend by qualifying tenth overall and finishing a disappointing fifteenth, fourth in the B class. Sunday provided Mason with an opportunity to redeem himself. His two tenth-place finishes netted Mason second and third-place results in F1600B.
After winning the F1600B championship in 2019 and 2020, James Lindsay moved to the A category piloting the No. 35 Van Diemen RF01. In the season opener at Shannonville, Lindsay could do no better than a sixth-place finish. When the series made its first stop at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he found himself challenging for the win. Over the weekend, Lindsay collected two runner-up results and a third-place finish.
F1600B competitor Bill Tebbutt began his 2022 campaign at Shannonville Motorsport Park with mixed results. He could not start Saturday’s contest because of an incident in the morning. The next day, Tebbutt finished second and fourth in class. At Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the driver of the No. 82 Blue Dread Racing Van Diemen RF90 collected a sixth-place result but also earned second and third-place finishes.
