In 2020, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. OSCAAR has been responsible for sanctioning many successful divisions over the years. Currently, OSCAAR oversees three divisions: Modified, Hot Rod and Pro Sprint.

The Modified division, which receives backing from Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC, draws many competitors and features some exciting race. The 2020 season was scheduled to kick off in May with an event at Sunset Speedway. However, everything changed with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and it appeared that there wouldn’t be any racing this year. In the background, Track Management at Jukasa Motor Speedway, Flamboro Speedway and Sauble Speedway, along with Series Officials, were able to work with all levels of government to make events possible.

The 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season consists of three race weekends. The first event takes place in early August at Jukasa Motor Speedway. Round two will be hosted by Flamboro Speedway. Teams will return to Jukasa Motor Speedway for the finale on September 26.

The cars competing in this class are purpose-built open-wheel vehicles. The Modifieds use a steel tube frame chassis, which is no less than 1-3/4-inch outside diameter with 0.095-inch wall thickness. Bodies are made of sheet metal with the driver’s compartment and engine bay covered. The cars may be any make or model, but they tend to have little to no resemblance to their road-going counterparts.

The engine option selected by the car owner determines the weight of the vehicle. A Modified using 350-horsepower Crate Engine is the lightest at 2,600-pounds and 2,775-pounds is required for a car powered by a Built Motor. Weight may be added or removed depending on the choice of transmission.

Many of the other rules governing the OSCAAR Modified class are for driver safety and to keep costs down.

Round two of the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season was scheduled to take place at Flamboro Speedway. However, changes were made and the second event of the championship was conducted at Sunset Speedway. Drivers would compete in a forty-five-lap race on the 0.333-mile banked paved oval.

The start of round two for the OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season at Sunset Speedway. After the grid was inverted, the seventh fastest qualifier, Chris Milwain, in the No. 21 Lawn Care Property Maintenance sponsored Modified started on the pole. Sharing the front row with Milwain is the No. 51 Modified with support from Reinhardt Trailers and driven by Dale Reinhardt, the sixth-place qualifier.
The winner of the opening race of the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified championship was Andy Kamrath. At Jukasa Motorsport, Kamrath started third, but was in the lead by lap-2 and pulled away from the field. In a similar set of circumstances, he started third at Sunset Speedway. However, he did not move into the top spot until the lap-26 restart and from there, Kamrath went unchallenged.
The season opener at Jukasa Motor Speedway wasn’t kind to Chad Strawn. The driver of the No. 21 Eibach Springs Modified was the second retiree of the race – only completing seventeen-laps. With his fuel issue resolved, the team was looking to redeem themselves at Sunset Speedway. Strawn missed setting the fastest time in qualifying by 0.022-seconds. He started in the sixth-position and finished second.
The driver of the No. 79 DDD Graphics sponsored Modified, Craig Downey failed to finish race one at Jukasa Motor Speedway. It appeared that his bad luck followed him to Sunset. Downey completed only one lap during the time trials and it was 14.905-seconds slower than the pole-winning time. Before the start of the contest, the crew corrected the issue and he charged through the field to finish in third place.
Corey Horner didn’t participate at Jukasa Motor Speedway, was ready for race two of the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified. Piloting the No. 79H Modified, Horner received support from Bonsma Brothers Inc. During the qualifier session, he was fifth fastest and after the inversion, Horner was gridded in the third position. After a solid performance, he was rewarded with a fourth-place finish.
On lap-19, smoke poured out of the exhaust of the No. 18 Oakville Auto and Diesel Modified of Jason Keen. At the very least, it appeared the twelfth fastest qualifier had a head gasket failure or maybe worse, he lost an engine. Keen came to a stop just before corner three, but not before the fluid left of the track caused the No. 10B of Kelly Balson to spin. He was classified fifteenth out of eighteen-starters.
During the time-trials, Kelly Balson recorded a time of 14.324-seconds around the 0.333-mile oval at Sunset Speedway. Balson’s speed was the fastest in the qualifying session and earned him the seventh starting position. He was in contention during the race when the engine in Jason Keen’s Modified dropped fluid on the track. Balson spun in turn two but was after a pit-stop returned he to the contest and finished fifth.
The winner of round two for the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified championship at Sunset Speedway was Andy Kamrath. This was the second victory of the season for the driver of the No. 89C London Recreation Racing supported Modified. With the series at the halfway point, Kamrath is leading the point standings by a healthy margin.
