In 2020, the Ontario Stock Car Association of Asphalt Racers (OSCAAR) celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. OSCAAR has been responsible for sanctioning many successful divisions over the years. Currently, OSCAAR oversees three divisions: Modified, Hot Rod and Pro Sprint.

The Modified division, which receives backing from Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC, draws many competitors and features some exciting race. The 2020 season was scheduled to kick off in May with an event at Sunset Speedway. However, everything changed with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and it appeared that there wouldn’t be any racing this year. In the background, Track Management at Jukasa Motor Speedway, Flamboro Speedway and Sauble Speedway, along with Series Officials, were able to work with all levels of government to make events possible.

The 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season consists of three race weekends. The first event takes place in early August at Jukasa Motor Speedway. Round two will be hosted by Flamboro Speedway. Teams will return to Jukasa Motor Speedway for the finale on September 26.

The cars competing in this class are purpose-built open-wheel vehicles. The Modifieds use a steel tube frame chassis, which is no less than 1-3/4-inch outside diameter with 0.095-inch wall thickness. Bodies are made of sheet metal with the driver’s compartment and engine bay covered. The cars may be any make or model, but they tend to have little to no resemblance to their road-going counterparts.

The engine option selected by the car owner determines the weight of the vehicle. A Modified using 350-horsepower Crate Engine is the lightest at 2,600-pounds and 2,775-pounds is required for a car powered by a Built Motor. Weight may be added or removed depending on the choice of transmission.

Many of the other rules governing the OSCAAR Modified class are for driver safety and to keep costs down.

The 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season opened at Jukasa Motor Speedway as a support event for the APC United Late Model championship for Pro Late Models series. Drivers would compete in a forty-lap race on the 5/8-mile semi-banked paved oval.

A field of eighteen-entries participated in round one of the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified season opener at Jukasa Motor Speedway. Exiting corner two and starting on the pole is the No. 10b of Kelly Balson. Next to Balson is Jake Watson driving the No. 88 sponsored Curt’s Coolers Modified. Filling out the second row is the No. 89c of Andy Kamrath and T.J. Edwards in the No. 34.
Andy Kamrath has enjoyed success at Jukasa Motor Speedway but in a different class. Kamrath competed in the Super Stock event at the 2018 Canadian Short Track Nationals and took home the $5,000 prize fund. In the first race of the season at Jukasa, he participated in OSCAAR’s Modified division. The driver of the London Recreation car moved into the lead on lap-2 and scored the victory.
Late Model racer, TJ Edwards entered this year’s OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified series. Edwards tested the No. 34 Just Foam It Spray Insulation sponsored car before round one of the championship - his preparation paid off. In the qualifying session at Jukasa Motor Speedway, he was second fastest. Starting in the fourth position, Edwards battled his way to the front and finished in the second spot.
The competitive, AJ Emms had a miserable outing last season in the OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified event at Jukasa Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 14 BAC Environmental / FMR Scrap Buyers sponsored Modified started seventh and finished a lap behind the leaders in eleventh place. 2020 was an opportunity for Emms to redeem himself. He started this year’s event in ninth and finished in third place.
A glitch prevented Jeff Walt from recording a time during the qualifying session. OSCAAR Officials gave him the option of participating in a second attempt. Walt accepted the offer and set the fastest time. After the grid was inverted, he started in the fifth position. Walt wasn’t able to find the same speed during the forty-lap contest and was in sixth-place at the checkered flag.
At last year’s OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC event at Jukasa Motor Speedway, the car owner of the No. 10B Modified, Kelly Balson, stepped aside and gave his seat to JR Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, a former NASCAR Pinty’s competitor and the 2018 APC Champion adapted quickly and finished in the runner-up position. Balson started this year’s contest on the pole after qualifying fifth fastest and finished fourth.
The top three finishers for round one of the 2020 OSCAAR Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC Modified event at Jukasa Motor Speedway. In the center is the winner, Andy Kamrath. Kamrath’s racing resume now included victories in the Super Stock and Modified categories at Jukasa. Standing on the left is the runner-up, TJ Edwards. The final position is occupied by the third-place finisher, AJ Emms.
