The 39th running of the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) Vintage Grand Prix was held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). The highlight of the weekend was the Historic Formula 1 and Formula Junior World Tour contests.

Vehicles racing at CTMP compete in one of six broad categories depending on the type and age of the automobile. Within many of the categories are a number of classes.

  • Vintage Small Bore – This race group is made up of small displacement sports cars and sedans such as the MG Midget, Mini Cooper, Austin Healey Sprite, etc.
  • Vintage Big Bore – Vehicles in this category were produced during the same period as Vintage Small Bore cars but as their title suggests – equipped with larger engines. The Ford Mustang, MGB, Chevrolet Camaro and Porsche 911 are vehicles commonly found in this group.
  • Monoposto – This category was conceived to accommodate purpose-built race cars – such as open wheel and sports racers.
  • Classic – The Classic category includes Group 70+ for production based vehicles built between 1973 and 1989. Also part of the category is Group 90+ for newer cars (1990 to 1997). Vehicles in this category include the Porsche 944, Datsun 240Z, Chevrolet Corvette, BMW M3, etc.
  • Royale Formula Ford Challenge – This series is for older Formula Fords which are placed into one of three classes: Historic Formula Ford (first generation cars – 1967-72), Post 1972 Club Formula Ford (second generation cars) and Post – 1981 (third generation Formula Fords with no aero or inboard suspension – front and rear).
  • Formula 5000 – This is an open wheel class for formula cars that are powered by 5.0-liter engines. In North America, a championship for Formula 5000 ran from 1968 to 1976. Manufacturers such a McLaren, Lola, Surtees, Chevrolet, Eagle, Matich and McRae constructed chassis’ for competitors.

Over 200-drivers competed in twenty-minute races around Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.
