The sixth season of the International Motor Sports Association Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada presented by Yokohama kicks off on May 20-22 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In 2016, there are six race weekends with two forty-five-minute rounds at every series event. Following Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, teams will travel to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve acting, as a support event for the Canadian Grand Prix. Then competitors travel south of the border where the Canadian and American series will be combined. In mid-July, it is back to Ontario for a doubleheader at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. Rounds nine and ten will be conducted on the temporary street circuit at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. The championship weekend will take place where the season started, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Competitors score points in one of three classes – Platinum Cup, Gold Cup and Silver Cup. The series also offers a Masters division for drivers 45-years of age or older.

  • Platinum Cup – this category is comprised of the 2014 and 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car – 991 model.
  • Gold Cup – this group is for older models produced from 2010 to 2013 – 997 model.

The vehicles in the Platinum and Gold Cup categories use the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. This particular model was developed by Porsche for the one-make series that takes place throughout the world. The 911 GT3 Cup racing version is based on the production 911 GT3 RS road car. The latest cars are powered by a motor similar to those used in the 911 GT3 RS model. The engine is a 3.8-liter flat six-cylinder that produces 460-horsepower at 7,500-rpm.

  • Silver Cup – the newest class, features the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

The racing version of the Cayman uses a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, which produces 385-horsepower. The car is also equipped with a PDK automatic transmission.

The first two rounds of the 2016 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada presented by Yokohama were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on the Victoria Day long weekend. Drivers would compete in two forty-five-minute races around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

Last year’s Platinum Cup runner-up, Daniel Morad, opened his 2016 campaign with a victory driving the No. 17 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup. Morad started race one on the outside of the front row but passed the pole-sitter, Scott Hargrove before the field arrived at turn two. From there, he led flag-to-flag. Contact at the bottom of corner two on lap-1 took Morad and Hargrove out of the weekend’s second contest.
Former open-wheel racer, Zacharie Robichon, joined the Mark Motors Racing team for the 2016 season, driving the No. 78 Porsche GT3 Cup. He was third-fastest in the qualifying session for round one and chased Daniel Morad and Scott Hargrove to a third-place finish. Robichon started in the same position on Sunday, but when the leaders, Morad and Hargrove, made contact, he inherited the lead and victory.
Just three cars were entered in the new Silver Cup category for Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Unfortunately, the Porsche entered for Jordan Redlin was unable to compete. Andrew Danyliw would dominate the opening weekend in the No. 38 SCB Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Danyliw qualified on the class pole for both contests and led from start to finish for a pair of victories.
The 2011 Gold Cup champion Shaun McKaigue returned for his sixth season in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. McKaigue, driving the No. 34 Fioran Racing prepared Porsche GT3 Cup, qualified on the class pole for Saturday’s race and earned his first victory since 2014 at Calabogie Motorsport Park. In the finale, McKaigue started last in his group but was able to finish in the runner-up position.
Brazilian Bruno Chapinotti made his series debut last season in the opening rounds at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The weekend ran the gamut of emotions. An accident in qualifying prevented him from participating in race one. On Sunday, Chapinotti started at the rear and won the Gold Cup category. 2016 was much better as he earned a runner-up finish in round one and a win on Sunday.
In 2016, Scott Hargrove split his time between the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada and the Indy Lights Championship with Team Pelfrey. Hargrove returned with OpenRoad Racing driving the No. 28 Porsche GT3 Cup. He qualified on the pole for the opening round but lost the lead on lap-1 to Daniel Morad. Hargrove would finish second. On Sunday, he was eliminated from the race after contact with Morad.
One of the beneficiaries of the contact between Daniel Morad and Scott Hargrove in race two was Michael De Quesada. De Quesada started the weekend’s second event in the fifth position but found himself in second place after the contact between the leaders. He chased Zacharie Robichon to a runner-up result. The previous day, De Quesada finished seventh driving the No. 16 Alegra Motorsport Porsche GT3 Cup.
Sweeping the Platinum Masters division in the opening weekend of the 2016 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada was series veteran and three-time class champion, Marco Cirone. Cirone was the fourth fastest in the qualifying session for the weekend’s first contest. In the race, he chased the leaders to a fourth-place finish. The incident between Daniel Morad and Scott Hargrove on Sunday allowed Cirone to finish third overall.
