The internationally successful Porsche GT3 Cup series was introduced to Canadian fans and participants in 2011. The championship is one of twenty-three similar GT3 Cup series contested throughout the world.

This year’s Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin kicks off on the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). Drivers will collect championship points during Saturday and Sunday races. Each event on the 2013 calendar was a doubleheader race weekend. The series then travels to Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve as a support event for the Canadian Grand Prix. Next on the schedule is the second visit to CTMP during the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport. This is followed by a weekend at Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres for rounds seven and eight. Championships are decided during the final two races at Calabogie Motorsports Park in mid-August.

For 2013 series organizers dropped the Silver Cup category but added a Masters division for drivers 45-years of age and old for the Platinum and Gold Cup classes.

  • Platinum Cup – This category is for the 2010 - 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup models. The GT3 Cup Porsche is based on the 911 street version.
  • Gold Cup – Older (2005-1/2 - 2009) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars compete in this division.

A 4.0-liter aluminum six-cylinder engine powers the current generation Porsche GT3 Cup. The motor produces 450-horsepower at 7,500-rpm and is fitted to a six-speed sequential transmission. Stopping the Porsche are aluminum six-piston calipers on the front – while the rear is equipped with four-piston calipers. The alloy rims on the front of the Porsche are 9.5J X 18 and use 24/64-18 Michelin tires. And, on the rear are 12J X 18 wheels with 30/68-18 tires. The GT3 Cup weighs just over 1,180-kg.

Rounds five and six of the 2013 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s 2.459-mile ten-turn road course during the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix Weekend.

The winner of race one at the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix event was Chris Green. Green captured his first victory of the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada in round three at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. In qualifying for round five at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he was the fastest. After a tight battle with David Ostella, Green won by a margin of 0.729-seconds. On Sunday, he finished third after starting on the pole.
Jean-Frederick Laberge swept the opening rounds of last year’s championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Laberge repeated this feat in the final two races of 2012 at Calabogie Motorsports Park. This season, his best result prior to the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix weekend was third-place in the opening round. In Sunday’s contest, he captured his first victory of 2013 after finishing sixth the previous day.
After finishing fifth in this year’s opening round of the series, David Ostella earned three consecutive podium results, of which two were victories. The driver of the No. 13 Speed Merchants Porsche GT3 Cup qualified seventh fastest for the weekend’s first contest. In the race, Ostella maneuvered his way to the front and finished a close second. In the finale, he kept his podium streak alive with another runner-up finish.
Spencer Pigot drove the No. 21 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup in the first four rounds of the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Cup Canada. For races five and six at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the seat in that car would be occupied by Indy Lights competitor Victor Carbone. Carbone adapted quickly to the Porsche. He qualified second for Saturday’s contest and finished third. The next, he captured a fifth-place result.
There were only three Gold Cup competitors entered for rounds five and six of the championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. At the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix event, this category was dominated by Carlos de Quesada. De Quesada qualified on the class pole and won both of the weekend’s races driving the No. 50 Alegra Motorsports prepared Porsche GT3 Cup.
The top Platinum Cup Master’s division (for drivers over 45-years of age) competitor at rounds five and six of the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada was Marco Cirone. Cirone had three Master’s victories when the series made its second visit to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Driving the No. 88 Mark Motors Racing Porsche GT3 Cup, he would finish fourth overall both days and add two more wins to his total.
