The 2013 Formula 2000 Championship is an open-wheel series for Formula 2000 race cars organized by Formula Race Promotions. Formula Race Promotions was formed in 2006, with their race weekends sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America.

The cars competing in the Formula 2000 Championship Series conform to the Sports Club of America's (SCCA) Formula Continent class. They are single-seat, rear-engine, open-wheel vehicles constructed with a tube frame chassis. Manufacturers producing series chassis include Radon, Mygale, Metrik, Piper and Citation, and RFR (Firman Cars), but the most popular choice is Van Diemen. The suspensions are independent – both front and rear. Shock absorbers and sway bars are adjustable. All competitors use the older 2.0-liter SOHC four-cylinder or, the newer Zetec Ford engine. A four-speed, non-synchro gearbox is used. Sequential transmissions are not permitted.

The series is open to all competitors with an SCCA National or SCCA Pro Racing license.

In addition to Hoosier Tires, the championship receives support from PI Research, Intercomp Racing Systems, Racing Electronics, Pennon, Martini, Quicksilver RacEngines, WISKO Race Engineering, Williams Racing Development and Mathisen Media.

The championship consists of seven doubleheader weekends, each contested on road courses. The season begins in April at Virginia International Raceway and ends with the final two races at Summit Point.

  • April 12-14 - Virginia International Raceway
  • May 9-11 - Road Atlanta
  • May 24-25 - Lime Rock Park
  • June 27-29 - Watkins Glen International
  • July 26-28 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • August 9-11 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • August 23-25 - Summit Point

Rounds seven and eight of the 2013 Formula 2000 Championship were held a Watkins Glen International. Drivers would compete in two eighteen-lap races around the eleven-turn 3.337-mile road course.

The start of round eight for the 2013 Formula 2000 Championship at Watkins Glen International. Leading the field of thirty-four drivers into corner one is the pole-sitter, Kyle Connery, in the James Lee Racing Van Diemen RF04. Behind Lee and spreading out across the course is the No. 9 Van Diemen RF05 of Roberto Lorena, David Grant driving the No. 29 Van Diemen RF03 and the No. 88 Citation of Tim Minor.
After six rounds, the points leader and Masters Class competitor (drivers 40-years of age and older), Tim Minor, had amassed five victories. His worst result came at Lime Rock Park, where Minor finished in the thirteenth position. He started race one at Watkins Glen on the outside of the front row. Minor passed the pole-sitter, Kyle Connery, for the lead and his sixth win of 2013. On Sunday, he qualified and finished second.
With three race weekends (six rounds) completed, Kyle Connery had one victory, which he earned at Lime Rock Park in race six. His record also included runner-up results at Virginia International Raceway and Road Atlanta. At Watkins Glen International, Connery won the pole for Saturday and Sunday's contests. In the weekend's first race, he was beaten by the points leader, Tim Minor. In the finale, Connery grabbed the victory.
Fifteen-year-old Santino Ferrucci was making his first F2000 Championship career start at Watkins Glen International. Ferrucci drove the No. 10 HP-Motorsport Van Diemen RF04. He qualified third fastest for the weekend's first contest and earned the final position on the podium. The next day, he was gridded in the fourth spot. During the race, positions changed around Ferrucci, but he crossed the finish line in fourth place.
Brazilian Fabio Orsolon made his Formula 2000 Championship debut in 2009; however, he has not always competed full-time. This year he participated in the season opener but failed to score any points. Orsolon's next event was the Watkins Glen weekend. Driving the No. 77 Fiber Dynamics Radon, he qualified fifth for race one but failed to finish. He ended the weekend with a third-place result after starting thirty-fourth!
