The 2011 Formula 1600 Championship is an open-wheel series for Formula 1600 race cars organized by Formula Race Promotions. Formula Race Promotions was formed in 2006, with their race weekends being sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America.

The Formula 1600 Championship is a support event for the Vintage Racing Group, Grand American, NASCAR and SCCA Pro Racing.

The series is open to all competitors with an SCCA National or SCCA Pro Racing license.

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the newly introduced 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Teams are required to use a spec Hoosier Racing Tire.

Series backing comes from Honda Racing, Williams Racing Development, Mathisen Media, Intercomp and Racing Electronics.

The championship consists of five doubleheader weekends, each contested on road courses. The season begins in April at Virginia International Raceway and ends with the final two races at Watkins Glen International.

  • April 8-10 - Virginia International Raceway
  • May 6-7 - Road Atlanta
  • June 2-5 - Watkins Glen International
  • June 30-July 2 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • July 21-23 - Mosport International Raceway
  • September 16-17 - Lime Rock Park
  • October 14-16 - Watkins Glen International

The second weekend of the 2011 F1600 Championship was held at Watkins Glen International. Drivers would compete in to twelve-lap contests around the eleven-turn 3.337-mile road course.

The first lap through corner two at Watkins Glen International for round three of the 2011 F1600 Championship. Leading the twenty-four starters is the fourth fastest qualifier, James Goughary, in the No. 7 Raceworks prepared Piper DF-5. Behind Goughary is the No. 10 Van Diemen RF00 of the second-fastest qualifier, Ryan Leach. Trailing the leaders are the Swift DB-6s of Bill Valet and Colin Thompson.
The winner of Saturday’s contest was Bill Valet. Valet opened the season with a pair of runner-up finishes at Virginia International Raceway. He put the No. 83 Loynings Engines sponsored Swift DB-6 on the pole for race one at Watkins Glen International and fell to fourth place before grabbing the victory. The next day, Valet had an accident in qualifying. Starting in the fifth position, he charged to a runner-up result.
The points leader heading into Watkins Glen was Tim Katz. Katz won the two opening rounds in Virginia. He was the third fastest in qualifying for race one. Problems for the second-place starter, Ryan Leach, allowed the driver of the No. 88 Piper DF-3 to inherit a runner-up result. Knaus qualified on the pole for the final, but a mistake dropped him to eleventh place. He worked his way through the field for the victory.
The No. 5 TTO Motorsports Swift DB-6 was driven by Colin Thompson. Thompson had a disappointing outing at Virginia and was looking to redeem himself at Watkins Glen. He qualified sixth fastest for the weekend’s first contest and earned the final spot on the podium. Thompson was gridded second for Sunday’s event but fell to sixth place at the start. He moved up to second, but a late race spin resulted in a sixth-place finish.
John Robinson collected a pair of third-place results in the season opener at Virginia. Robinson qualified seventh fastest in the No. 19 Swift DB-6 for race one at Watkins Glen. During the race, he was passed by Art Foster but inherited positions from Ryan Leach and James Goughary to finish sixth. On Sunday, Robinson started in the fourth position and was rewarded with a podium after passing James Goughary.
