The 2010 Formula 2000 Championship is an open-wheel series for Formula 2000 race cars organized by Formula Race Promotions. Formula Race Promotions was formed in 2006, with their race weekends being sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America.

The cars competing in the Formula 2000 Championship Series conform to the Sports Club of America’s (SCCA) Formula Continent class. They are single-seat, rear-engine, open-wheel vehicles constructed with a tube frame chassis. Manufacturers producing series chassis include Carbir, Mygale, Tatuus, Piper and Citation, but the most popular choice is Van Diemen. The suspensions are independent – both front and rear. Shock absorbers and sway bars are adjustable. All competitors use the older 2.0-liter SOHC four-cylinder or, the newer Zetec Ford engine. A four-speed, non-synchro gearbox is used. Sequential transmissions are not permitted.

The series is open to all competitors with an SCCA National or SCCA Pro Racing license.

In addition to Hoosier Tires, the championship receives support from RTS Racing Wheels, PI Research, Taylor Race Engineering, Intercomp Racing Systems, Sunoco and GTP Racing Components.

The championship consists of seven doubleheader weekends, each contested on road courses. The season begins in April at Virginia International Raceway and ends with the final two races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

  • April 9-11 - Virginia International Raceway
  • May 6-8 - Road Atlanta
  • June 11-13 - Mosport International Raceway
  • July 2-4 - Watkins Glen International
  • July 23-24 - Lime Rock Park
  • August 6-8 - Road America
  • September 2-5 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

Rounds five and six of the 2010 Formula 2000 Championship were held during the Vortex 200 Brake Pad event at Mosport International Raceway. Drivers would compete on the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

2010 would allow Remi Audette to redeem himself after a disappointing outing last season at Mosport International Raceway. In 2009, he put the No. 21 Dimension Doors / NOVATECH sponsored Van Diemen RF08 on the pole for Saturday’s contest. However, this year Audette grabbed the win in wet conditions. The next day, he started and finished in the third position.
Championship leader Victor Carbone was victorious in the first three rounds of 2010, along with a disappointing fourth-place result at Virginia International Raceway. The Brazilian drove the No. 23 Alegra Racing prepared Van Diemen RF02. He was second fastest in qualifying for race one at Mosport International Raceway, but a spin resulted in a fourth-place finish. On Sunday, Carbone earned his fourth win of the year.
Last year, Phil Lombardi participated part-time and collected a runner-up result at Watkins Glen International. He returned to this year’s series driving the No. 3 GTP Motorsports prepared Van Diemen RF01. Lombardi qualified seventh for the first race at Mosport. Taking advantage of the tricky conditions, he finished second. In the finale, he started fourth but finished fifth after being passed by Tim Minor.
Cole Morgan returned to the series after winning the 2007 championship and proved he’s just as quick as ever. Morgan piloted the No. 1 Liberty Motorsports Van Diemen RF06. His season started with a victory at VIR. Rounds five and six would be his first visit to Mosport. Morgan qualified fifth for the weekend’s first contest and grabbed the final sport on the podium. He started and finished second in the finale.
Master’s category (for competitors 40 years of age and older) driver Keith McCrone hadn’t earned any podium finishes to date. However, he delivered performances that saw him consistently finish in the top ten. McCrone continued this trend at Mosport, piloting the No. 5 R-Sports Van Diemen RF01. On Saturday, he finished sixth after qualifying ninth. McCrone started and finished sixth on Sunday.
