The 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires offered racers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents at some of eastern Canada’s most widely recognized and well-established race tracks. The series provided amateur competitors with professionally organized events that would attract sponsors and fans. The success of the championship was reflected in the number of drivers who participated in race weekends. The average car count in 2009 per event was twenty-nine entries.

This 2010 schedule consists of seven race weekends at five different facilities. The format at each venue includes two races – generally, thirty-minutes in length. As has become tradition, the season kicks off on the Victoria Day long weekend at Mosport International Raceway. This is followed by the second of three stops at Mosport when the championship is a support event for the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Two weeks later, teams travel Quebec and compete at the ICAR Mirabel Airport circuit. Then it is back to Ontario for the series premiere event – Exhibition Place, Toronto, with the IndyCar Championship. Then teams make their only stop at on the street circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The penultimate rounds are conducted at Mosport during the Grand Prix of Mosport. Series champions will be crowned when teams make their second visit to ICAR in September.

In 2010, there were two classes. To help fans distinguish between the groups, the cars are fitted with different coloured windshield banners.

  • Touring - (Blue Window Banner) – This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed a minimal amount of performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Sentra and Acura Integra.
  • Super Touring – (Yellow Window Banner) - Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in the group include BMW, Subaru and Audi.

Rounds seven and eight of the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires were held at Toronto’s Exhibition Place during the Indy Car weekend. Drivers would compete on the 2.82-kilometer (1.755-mile) temporary street circuit in two thirty-minute contests.

The start of Sunday’s round eight for the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. Leading the field of thirty-two entrants into corner one is the pole-sitter, Nick Wittmer, in the No. 1 Lombardi Racing Honda Civic Si-R. Beside Wittmer is the other front row starter, Sasha Anis driving the No. 87 G1 Racing prepared Hyundai Genesis. Immediately behind them are Greg Pootmans and David Bensadoun.
It was another productive point scoring weekend for the Super Touring championship leader, Nick Wittmer. In the first contest of the weekend, Wittmer started on the pole and led flag-to-flag for his third victory of the season. On Sunday, the driver of the No. 1 Lombardi Racing Honda Civic Si-R, also started in the top spot, but this time he could not defend a challenge from Sasha Anis and finished in the runner-up position.
To date, Touring driver Tom Kwok has delivered mixed results. Piloting the No. 55 M&S Racing Honda Civic, Kwok has two podium finishes and a couple of results outside the top-ten. In Toronto, he proved to be unbeatable. Kwok qualified eleventh overall and first in class for race one and would capture the victory. In round eight, he started from the category pole and scored his second win of the weekend.
G1 Racing’s 2010 season got off to a slow start. Team principal, Bob Attrell was joined by Sasha Anis for the series second visit to Mosport International Raceway. Prior to rounds seven and eight, the group’s best result was an eighth-place at ICAR. While Attrell continued to encounter issues in Toronto, Anis captured a runner-up finish from the third starting position on Saturday and was victorious in the weekend’s final race.
Six podium results in six starts of which three were victories gave Touring competitor, Anthony Rapone, the points lead in the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship. Unfortunately, his string of consecutive podium finishes would end in Toronto. On Saturday, Rapone missed the final step on the podium by one position. The next day, he rebounded and took the No. 72 Honda Civic Si to a runner-up finish.
Another Touring category title contender was Michel Sallenbach. Sallenbach drove the No. 46 Octane Motorsports Mini Cooper S. In the first six races of the 2010 season, Sallenbach’s record included only two podium results, but he was consistently near or in the top-five. For race one at Toronto, he qualified fourth in class but finished in the runner-up position. On Sunday, he was a distant tenth – two-laps behind the class leaders.
The Aldo-Northwest Racing team prepared BMWs for Paul Dalla Lana, David Bensadoun and Greg Pootmans. Pootmans, driver of the No. 16 BMW 328i proved to be the group’s star at the Toronto event. He was fifth fastest in qualifying for round seven and in the race, Pootmans earned the last position on the Super Touring rostrum. On Sunday, he started and finished in the third-place.
In round six of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship, Patrick Seguin missed securing a Touring rostrum result by one position. At Toronto’s Exhibition Place, Seguin would rectify the situation. He drove the No. 80 Canadian Classic Cars Motorsport Honda Civic Si and qualified fifth in class for race one, but at the checkered flag was in third-place. On Sunday, he earned his second podium finish of 2010.
It was a disappointing trip to Toronto for Quebec’s Mathieu Audette. The Super Touring title contender had four podium results, including a victory in round four at Mosport International Raceway. Audette qualified second for the weekend’s first contest, but the No. 12 Audette Racing Acura RSX Type-S developed a mechanical issue and he retired on lap-6. In the finale, Audette only completed eight-laps.
