The 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires offered racers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents at some of eastern Canada’s most widely recognized and well-established race tracks. The series provided amateur competitors with professionally organized events that would attract sponsors and fans. The success of the championship was reflected in the number of drivers who participated in race weekends. The average car count in 2009 per event was twenty-nine entries.

This 2010 schedule consists of seven race weekends at five different facilities. The format at each venue includes two races – generally, thirty-minutes in length. As has become tradition, the season kicks off on the Victoria Day long weekend at Mosport International Raceway. This is followed by the second of three stops at Mosport when the championship is a support event for the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Two weeks later, teams travel Quebec and compete at the ICAR Mirabel Airport circuit. Then it is back to Ontario for the series premiere event – Exhibition Place, Toronto, with the IndyCar Championship. Then teams make their only stop at on the street circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The penultimate rounds are conducted at Mosport during the Grand Prix of Mosport. Series champions will be crowned when teams make their second visit to ICAR in September.

In 2010, there were two classes. To help fans distinguish between the groups, the cars are fitted with different coloured windshield banners.

  • Touring - (Blue Window Banner) – This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed a minimal amount of performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Sentra and Acura Integra.
  • Super Touring – (Yellow Window Banner) - Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in the group include BMW, Subaru and Audi.

The Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires returned to Mosport International Raceway for their second visit of the 2010 season. Rounds three and four would be conducted in mid-June around the ten turn 2.459-mile road course.

The start of round three for the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship at Mosport International Raceway. Leading the field into corner one is the pole-sitter, Mathieu Audette, in the No. 12 Audette Racing Acura RSX Type-S. Moving into second is the No. 16 Northwest Racing BMW 328i of the other front row starter, Greg Pootmans. A total of thirty-two competitors participated in this race.
Nick Wittmer, the defending Super Touring class champion, would leave the weekend at Mosport with the points lead. Wittmer, driving the No. 1 Lombardi Racing Honda Civic Si-R, qualified third fastest for Saturday’s race and used his superior wet weather driving skills to capture his first victory of the season. In round four, he started on the pole but lost positions to Mathieu Audette and Greg Pootmans.
It was a momentous weekend for series regular P.J. Groenke as he scored his first Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship victory. In qualifying for round three, Groenke was third fastest in the Touring category. During the race, Tom Kwok fell out of contention and Groenke passed the class pole-sitter, Nigel Heron, for the win. On Sunday, he raced his new Volkswagen Golf GTi Turbo and finished eighth in Touring.
The No. 90 Acura Integra Type R was raced by Heron Motorsport’s Nigel Heron. For the weekend’s first contest, Heron was thirteenth fastest but quickest in the Touring category. During the round three-race, he lost a position to P.J. Groenke and finished in the runner-up position. The next day, Heron started on the class pole, but he retired after nine-laps and was classified as thirteenth in the Touring group.
Super Touring championship contender, Mathieu Audette, drove the No. 12 Audette Racing Acura RSX Type-S. Audette started the weekend at Mosport International Speedway ‘on the right foot’ by capturing the overall pole-position. In the race, he was no match for Nick Wittmer and finished a distant second. In round four, Audette redeemed himself and scored his first victory of the 2010 season.
The round four Castrol Canadian Touring Car podium for the Touring category at Mosport International Raceway. Standing the center from the Durabond-Compass360 Racing team is the winner, Karl Tomson. On the left side of the rostrum is the runner-up, Tom Kwok. Completing the podium is the third-place finisher and Tomson’s Durabond-Compass360 Racing teammate, Anthony Rapone.
The field lines up in Mosport International Raceway’s corner nine for round four of the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship. On the pole is the No. 1 Lombardi Racing Honda Civic Si-R of Saturday’s winner, Nick Wittmer. On the outside of the front row is yesterday’s fastest qualifier, Mathieu Audette, in the No. 12 Audette Racing Acura RSX Type-S. Thirty-two drivers started this race.
Last season’s Touring class runner-up, Anthony Rapone, began his 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship campaign with a pair of victories. In round three, the driver of No. 72 Durabond-Compass360 Honda Civic Si, notched up another podium result with a third-place finish. On Sunday, he repeated his performance and retained the points lead.
M&S Racing’s Gary Kwok practiced with his new Super Touring Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X during the opening weekend but chose to compete in his familiar Acura CSX. In rounds three and four at Mosport International Raceway, Kwok decided ‘the time was right’ to race the Mitsubishi. It proved to be a good choice as Kwok finished third in the car’s initial outing. The next day, he placed fifth in his group.
The No. 71 Durabond-Compass360 Racing Honda Civic Si was piloted by Karl Tomson. Tomson’s teammates included Andrew Danyliw and the winner of the opening rounds, Anthony Rapone. In race three at Mosport International Raceway, he missed the Touring podium by one position – finishing fourth. On Sunday, Tomson redeemed himself with his first victory of the 2010 season.
David Ciekiewicz opened the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship with a third and fourth-place finish in the Super Touring category. Ciekiewicz failed to record a qualifying time for round three and started from the rear of the grid in the No. 36 Donington Wenzel Motorsports Subaru WRX STi. In the race, he charged through the field and finished fourth. On Sunday, Cieklewicz captured the runner-up position.
The second member of the M&S Racing team was Gary Kwok’s brother, Tom. Tom competed in the Touring category racing the No. 55 Honda Civic. He opened the season with a third-place finish in round two at Mosport International Raceway. In the series second visit to Mosport, Tom finished fifth in his group – one-lap behind the class leaders. In the final contest of the weekend, he secured the final spot on the podium.
