The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) held its first annual national championships at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on September 15-17, 2006. The event attracted competitors from all over the US and drew over four-hundred race cars.

The car racing sanctioning body NASA was formed in 1991 to deliver racing events throughout the United States. NASA is dedicated to organizing motorsports activities that allow its members of race and street cars to experience the excitement of putting their vehicles on the race track in a safe and controlled environment.

Eight race groups were racing at the 2006 NASA Championships. Within each group, there can be several classes.

  • Group A: American Iron (AI), American Iron Extreme (AIX), Camaro Mustang Challenge (CMC)
  • Group B: Factory Five Racing
  • Group C: Honda Challenge (HU-H5)
  • Group D: 944 Spec, 944 Cup, 944 Super Cup, WC, SU
  • Group E: Spec Miata (SM)
  • Group F: Performance Touring (PTA-PTF), RSR, Legends, Thunder Roadsters, Baby Grand, Spec Neon, SER Cup
  • Group H: German Touring Series (GTS1-GTS5), Spec 30 (Spec E30)

All races, except Groups E, F and H, were standing starts.
