Formula BMW made its European debut in 2002 to provide a complete foundation for a young driver's career.

All drivers in the series can take part in the BMW Education and Coaching Program, which includes:

  • Driving Techniques and Tactics
  • Vehicle Dynamics and Chassis Set-up
  • Fitness Training and Nutrition
  • Media and Public Relations
  • Sponsorship and Sports Management

Some of the successful drivers that have completed in the series include Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Christian Klien and Timo Glock.

The Formula BMW was sketched and modeled by DesignworksUSA. The car's body is inspired by the BMW Formula 1 shape. It has a carbon-fiber tub that exceeds FIA safety stands and the bodywork is made from a Kevlar composite. All drivers compete in a Mygale FB02.

The Mygale FB02 has Sachs SP3 adjustable shock absorbers and Eibach coil springs. The suspension is a push rod double wishbone design. The car also has aluminum OZ Racing wheels 8" X13" on the front and 10" X13" on the rear. The championship uses Michelin tires.

The 1300-lb Mygale FB02 is powered by a K1200RS BMW motorcycle engine (124EA). The four-cylinder double overhead camshaft motor has four valves per cylinder and a displacement of 1171cc. The liquid-cooled unit produces 140 bhp. Power is transferred through a Sachs single-plate clutch and a six-speed sequential Hewland gearbox.

The cars can be purchased from BMW Motorsport for $69,500 plus sales tax and import fees.

The first Formula BMW USA race was held in 2004 and sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association.

The 2006 schedule consisted of fourteen rounds at seven circuits.

The 2006 Formula BMW USA season ended at Mosport International Raceway with rounds thirteen and fourteen. Drivers would complete on the ten-turn, 2.459-mile round course.

Reed Stevens, driving the No. 13 HBR Formula BMW, qualified third fastest for the weekend's first race. The Californian moved into the lead on lap-5 and held the position to the checkered flag, which kept his championship hopes alive. In the finale, Stevens started and finished in the second position. At the end of the year, his points total was seven shy of the title, and he missed the runner-up spot by one marker.
Second in the title hunt for 2006 was Matt Lee, with a record of five rostrum results, of which four were runner-up finishes. The driver of the No. 44 Team Autotecnica Formula BMW qualified fifth for Saturday's contest and captured the final spot on the podium. Lee would end the season winning by a margin of 5.568-seconds. However, it was not enough and he was eliminated from the championship.
Simona de Silvestro piloted the No. 50 EuroInternational Formula BMW. Her season was full of highs and lows. In Sunday's contest at Mid-Ohio, she finished twenty-fifth, but two rounds later, she would earn a victory at Lime Rock. De Silvestro qualified sixth for round thirteen and an excellent drive in wet conditions was rewarded with a second place. On Sunday, she didn't fare as well, starting last and finishing tenth.
Another driver who delivered an inspiring performance on Sunday was Adrien Herberts. Herberts collected the final position on the podium in the second race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. However, to date, that was the highlight of his season. In Saturday's wet contest, Herberts qualified eleventh and finished thirteenth. In the final race of 2006, he started in eleventh place and gambled on dry tires to finish third.

Completing the rostrum is Canadian Adrien Herberts, who equaled his best result of 2006.
Entering the series' final weekend, four drivers had a mathematical chance of securing the title - Simona de Silvestro, Matt Lee, Reed Stevens and the points leader, Robert Wilkens. The Canadian drove the No. 66 Red Bull Formula BMW prepared by Team Apex Racing USA. The contenders, Lee and Stevens, earned victories. Wilkens only collected fourth and sixth-place results, but it was enough to take the crown.
