Formula BMW made its European debut in 2002 to provide a complete foundation for a young driver's career.

All drivers in the series can take part in the BMW Education and Coaching Program, which includes:

  • Driving Techniques and Tactics
  • Vehicle Dynamics and Chassis Set-up
  • Fitness Training and Nutrition
  • Media and Public Relations
  • Sponsorship and Sports Management

Some of the successful drivers that have completed in the series include Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Christian Klien and Timo Glock.

The Formula BMW was sketched and modeled by DesignworksUSA. The car's body is inspired by the BMW Formula 1 shape. It has a carbon-fiber tub that exceeds FIA safety stands and the bodywork is made from a Kevlar composite. All drivers compete in a Mygale FB02.

The Mygale FB02 has Sachs SP3 adjustable shock absorbers and Eibach coil springs. The suspension is a push rod double wishbone design. The car also has aluminum OZ Racing wheels 8" X13" on the front and 10" X13" on the rear. The championship uses Michelin tires.

The 1300-lb Mygale FB02 is powered by a K1200RS BMW motorcycle engine (124EA). The four-cylinder double overhead camshaft motor has four valves per cylinder and a displacement of 1171cc. The liquid-cooled unit produces 140 bhp. Power is transferred through a Sachs single-plate clutch and a six-speed sequential Hewland gearbox.

The cars can be purchased from BMW Motorsport for $69,500 plus sales tax and import fees.

The first Formula BMW USA race was held in 2004 and sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association.

The 2006 schedule consisted of fourteen rounds at seven circuits.

The 2006 Formula BMW USA season opened with rounds one and two at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Drivers would compete in two races around the thirteen-turn 2.258-mile road course.

Reed Stevens began the 2006 season, where he ended last year’s campaign. Stevens scored his first series victory in the final round of 2005 at Road Atlanta. He put the No. 10 HBR Motorsport Formula BMW on the pole for race one at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and led flag-to-flag. The next day, Stevens was gridded four but exited the event on the first lap and was credited with a twenty-fourth-place result.
Rookie Daniel Morad drove for the successful AIM Motorsport team. He piloted the No. 70 Formula BMW. Issues in qualifying forced him to start from the final position on the grid. With the problems resolved, Morad advanced twelve positions to finish fourteenth. On Sunday, he started twelfth and drove an inspired race to collect the victory by a margin of 1.295-seconds over John Zartarian.
Canadian Robert Wickens finished third in last year’s championship with victories at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and Denver. This season he was driving the No. 66 Red Bull Formula BMW prepared by Team Apex Racing USA. Wickens was fourth fastest for Saturday’s contest and passed David Garza and Ryan Phinney to finish second. In the finale, he started fifth but finished in the eighteenth position.
Rookie David Garza drove the No. 23 EuroInternational Formula BMW. Garza was the fastest in the qualifying session for Saturday’s contest and started on the pole. Unfortunately, the more experienced Reed Stevens and Robert Wickens passed him at the start of the race. The Mexican would claim the final position on the podium. Garza ended the weekend with another pole but finished in eighth place.
Gelles Racing fielded the largest number of entries in the 2006 Formula BMW USA Championship at five. The No. 3 Gelles Mygale FB02 was piloted by Adrien Herberts, who returned from last season. Herberts began his season by qualifying ninth fastest at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and finishing seventh. On Sunday, he fared much better. Herberts was gridded fifteenth but charged to a third-place finish.
