The 2024 Formula 1600 Championship is an open-wheel series for Formula 1600 race cars organized by Formula Race Promotions (FRP). FRP was formed in 2006, with their race weekends being sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America - Pro Racing division.

This race car category debuted in England but quickly became popular internationally for its low cost and competitiveness. These single-seater, open-wheel cars were originally referred to as Formula Ford and powered by a four-cylinder 1600-cc Ford engine. There is now an additional option to the Ford motor, which is a Honda Fit engine. This 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7 motor produces approximately 120 horsepower. Competitors use a mixture of European and North American chassis. Teams are required to use a spec Hoosier Racing Tire.

The series is supported by Hoosier Racing Tires, Parella Motorsports Holdings, Anze Suspension, Primus Racing Parts, Evolve Lubricants, RTD Media, and Speedcom Communications.

The championship consists of seven tripleheader weekends. All events are contested on road courses. The season begins in March at Road Atlanta and ends with the final three races at Summit Point Motorsports Park.

  • March 21-24 – Road Atlanta
  • April 26-28 - Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course
  • May 24-27 – Lime Rock Park
  • June 7-9 – Pittsburgh International Race Complex
  • June 28-30 – Road America
  • July 25-28 – New Jersey Motorsports Park
  • August 16-18 - Summit Point Motorsports Park

Drivers can score points in one of two divisions:

  • F1600 Masters - for drivers 39 years and older
  • F1600 – F1600 based on overall race results

The second race weekend of the 2024 FRP F1600 Championship Series was held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Drivers would compete in three contests around the thirteen-turn 2.258-mile road course.

This is the pace lap for the weekend's final Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course contest. Rounding the Keyhole are twenty-one F1600 competitors. On the pole is Thomas Schrage in the No. 02 Rice Race Prep Mygale GR. Sharing the front row with Schrage is the No. 45 CT Motorsports Piper DF5 driven by Dillon Defonce. Behind the leaders are Karsten Defonce in the No. 41 CT Motorsports Piper DF5 and the No. 7 Team Pelfrey Van Diemen RF02 piloted by Timothy Steele.
Thomas Schrage swept the weekend's three contests in the No. 02 Rice Race Prep Mygale GR. Schrage was the series 2022 FRP F1600 title holder, and this year, he joined Exclusive Autosport to compete in the USF2000 championship. Schrage started race one of the outside of the front row. He moved past Cooper Shipman for good on lap-5 and claimed the win. In Sunday morning's event, he went flag-to-flag and did the same in the finale.
The F1600 points leader after the first weekend of competition was Sebastian Mateo Naranjo. Race one at Road Atlanta was canceled due to rain, but Mateo Naranjo secured the victory in rounds two and three. The No. 80 Team Pelfrey Mygale SJ2014 driver qualified third for Saturday afternoon's contest and battled with Timothy Steele before finishing third. In the next race, Mateo Naranjo was second and ended the weekend in third place, with the points lead intact.
Another driver who delivered excellent results during the weekend was F1600 Masters competitor Joe Colasacco. Like Thomas Schrage, he swept his category. After Road Atlanta, Colasacco was third in the standings, driving the No. 3 Auriana Racing Van Diemen RF04. In the first race at Mid-Ohio, he started eleventh overall and second in class but earned the category win. The next day, Colasacco finished an incredible third overall and concluded the event with a seventh-place result.
Cooper Shipman had a miserable start to the season. At Road Atlanta, he collected eighteenth and seventeenth-place results. Mid-Ohio provided him with an opportunity to redeem himself. Shipman put the No. 14 IronRock Piper DB7 on the pole for Saturday's event. He was the only driver besides Thomas Schrage to lead a lap and finished second in the race. Sunday morning, Shipman tangled with Timothy Steele to place seventeenth and could not start the finale.

Standing on the top step is the series 2022 champion and winner, Thomas Schrage, from Rice Race Prep.  On the left is the No. 14 IronRock Piper DB7 driver and the runner-up, Cooper Shipman. Completing the rostrum is the series' current points leader and third-place finisher, Sebastian Mateo Naranjo.
F1600 veteran and Master competitor Scott Rubenzer, in the No. 31 Morgan's Collision Center Spectrum 2012FF, had a big moment in the Carousel on lap 12 of the weekend's first contest. His fellow competitors managed to avoid him, including Trevor Russell, who took to the grass. Rubenzer started Saturday's contest by qualifying on the class pole, but after his incident, he finished fourth in his category. He was a distant second in the next contest. In the finale, Rubenzer was third.
The No. 41 CT Motorsports Piper DF5 is driven by Karsten Defonce. Defonce is one-half of CT Motorsports, which includes Dillon Defonce. Defonce's season opened at Road Atlanta with tenth and eleventh-place finishes. He began his visit to Mid-Ohio by qualifying and finishing fifth in the first race of the weekend. The next morning, he placed fourth. However, Defonce started third in the finale and claimed a runner-up result.

Colasacco would sweep the weekend and find himself on the top step two more times. On the left is the runner-up and points leader entering the event, David H. Livingston Jr. Rounding out the top three is Phil Kingman, who drove the No. 47 Spectrum 011H.
